Former Green Beret Captain's Letter To Kerry
http://www.donbendell.com/ ^ | unknown | Bendell, Don

To: John F. Kerry

My wife had rotator cuff surgery earlier this year, and the recovery is terribly painful. Then, she developed a staph-epi infection, and they had to cut the same scar open and operate on her again. Just thinking about the pain and anxiety of facing that painful surgery a second time in the same wound, makes me cringe. That experience, however pales in comparison to what I am going through right now, in my heart. The old hurts are surfacing and the feelings of betrayal by fellow citizens, and their leader stirring them up, are breaking my heart again. I am being cut in the same scar. How did we who served in Vietnam suddenly become cold-blooded killers, torturers, and rapists, of the ilk of the Nazi SS or the Taliban? Most of us were American soldiers who grew up idolizing John Wayne, Roy Rogers, and all the other heroes. That was why I volunteered. But for political expediency, John Kerry has rewritten history, again. After spending only four months in the country of Vietnam, John Kerry testified before Congress in 1971 with these exact words about incidents he supposedly witnessed or heard about from other vets: “They personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam." I was a Green Beret officer who volunteered for duty in Vietnam and fought in the thick of it in 1968 and 1969 on a Special Forces A-team on the Ho Chi Minh Trail, just for starters. We were the elite. We saw the most action. Everybody in the world knows that. But we did not just kill people, we built a church, a school, treated illnesses, passed out soap, food, and clothing, and had fun and loving interaction with the indigenous people of Vietnam, just like our boys did in Normandy, Baghdad, Saigon, and everywhere American soldiers ever served. We all gave away our candy bars and rations to kids. Our hearts to oppressed people all over the globe. My children and grandchildren could read your words, and think those horrendous things about me, Mr. Kerry. You are a bold-faced, unprincipled liar, and a disgrace, and you have dishonored me and all my fellow Vietnam veterans. Sure, there were a couple bad-apples, but I saw none, and I saw it all, and if I did, as an army officer, it was my obligation to stop it, or at the very least report it. Why is there not a single record anywhere of you ever reporting any incidents like this or having the perpetrators arrested? The answer is simple. You are a liar. Your medals and mine are not a free pass for lifetime, Senator Kerry, to bypass character, integrity, and morality. I earn my green beret over and over daily in all aspects of my life. Eight National Guard green berets, and other National Guard soldiers, have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and you totally dishonored their widows and families by lumping National Guard service in with being a draft-dodger, conscientious objector, and deserter, just so you can try to sabotage the patriotism of our President who proudly served as an Air National Guard jet pilot. I have a son earning his green beret at Fort Bragg right now, and his wife serves honorably in the Air National Guard, just like President Bush did, and I am as proud of her as I am my son. I volunteered for Vietnam and have no problem whatsoever with President Bush being our Commander-In-Chief. In fact, I am proud of him as our leader. John Kerry, you personally derailed the Vietnam Human Rights Bill, HR2883, in 2001, after it had passed the House by a 411 to 1 vote, and thousands of pro-American Montagnard tribespeople in Vietnam died since then who could have been saved, by you. Earlier, as Chair of the Senate Select Committee on MIA/POW Affairs, you personally quashed the efforts of any and all veterans to report sightings of living POW’s, when you held those reins in Congress. You have fought tooth and nail to push for the US to normalize relations with Vietnam for years. Why, Mr. Kerry? Simple, your first cousin C. Stewart Forbes, CEO, of Colliers International, recently signed a contract with Hanoi, worth BILLIONS of dollars for Collier’s International to become the exclusive real estate representative for the country of Vietnam. “Hanoi John,” now that it works for you, you beat your chest about your Vietnam service, but to me, you are a phony, opportunistic, hypocrite. You are one of those politicians that is like a fertilizer machine: all that comes out of you is horse manure, and you are spreading it everywhere. Medals do not make a man. Morals do.

If this has been posted before I apologise. I did a search and did not find any reference to this open letter to John Kerry. If it has not been posted, I believe that it is a meaningful rebutal to Kerry's "war hero" claim.

The New York Times congratulates Kerry for taking teo sides on an issue.

This is his greatest strength. He came back from Nam a war hero. He took a side. He may have nominated himself for his medals. He was proud.

He then demonstrated against the war. He admited he was a war criminal and said all vets in Nam were involved. He was the German soldier, ah officer, following orders.

We must hand it to Kerry, after all of these years in the Senate he has settled as the hawkish anti-war hero.

I understand now. It took the help of the Times.

It was so compelling, I didn't mind the lack of paragraphs. The article left me breathless.

The answer is simple. You are a liar.

The Vietnamese-American newspapers have been calling Kerry a "phan boi" in their recent coverage of his VVAW activities.

"Phan boi" = traitor.

Here is an email a retired general sent to John Kerry concerning his comments about the National Guard. I removed his name and address. Here is an email address for Kerry.

To: info@johnkerry.com

Subject: Army National Guard Vietnam Veteran

Please clarify Mr. Kerry's comments about President Bush's Texas Air National Guard service, "citizens serving their community, state and nation" in the National Guard as a draft dodger? Senator Kerry's reference to our great young men and women "Citizen Soldiers", as draft dodgers doesn't set very well with me and my family. When Senator Kerry slurs President Bush's service as a National Guardsman, he paints all Guardsmen and Women with the same brush.

You see, my Grandfather, and my Father served in the Massachusetts National Guard. My Father, after National Guard service (12 years), joined the Navy prior to World War II and was mobilized for the war in 1939. After the war he returned to civilian life, transferring to the active Naval Reserve. In 1949 his reserve unit was mobilized for the Korean war, after the war he remained on Active Duty until his retirement in July 1966 (he was still on active duty during the early years of the Vietnam conflict). His total combined service to his community, state (MA) and nation (National Guard, Naval Reserve & Regular Navy - 42 years). He served honorably in a draft military, both in peace and war. Please note: My Father was born and raised in Somerville, MA.

My service in US Army National Guard (Florida) began on August 3, 1968, after serving six and half years in the active Army, including a combat tour in the Republic of South Vietnam (August 1965 to September 1966). After completing my active service I was honorably discharged (May 1968) and entered service with the Florida Army National Guard. I transferred to the Texas Army National Guard in April 1972, remaining in service until June 30, 2002, at which time I retired.

My son is an Active duty Army Officer serving in the Texas Army National Guard. He has been selected to command a maneuver battalion within this calendar year.

As you can see my family has long history of service to our Great Country.

Our Great Citizen Soldiers are serving in all theaters on the War on Terrorism, and are part of the US Air Force and US Army teams. I am disappointed in Mr. Kerry's lack of judgment in his comment, and lack of knowledge of this country's Reserve Components. Incidentally, our citizen soldier's make up a large part of our Army and Air Force. Over 50% of the combat, combat support and combat service support that are go to war troop units (that augment) the active forces come out of the US Army and Air National Guard (54 states and possessions).

Please ask Mr. Kerry, not forget that the Citizen Soldiers (all Reservists), as we represent a large cross-section of America. If Senator Kerry becomes the next president (remember Guardsmen and women vote), he will be the Commander and Chief over the National Guard too.

Sincerely, Veteran (Vietnam) and Veteran (US Army National Guard - Florida/Texas),

Brigadier General, US Army (Retired)

Medals do not make a man. Morals do.

And, yet, here is an exchange between Stuart Symington (D-MO) and Kerry, when Kerry appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee

Symington: "You have a Silver Star?"

Kerry: "Yes, sir."

Symington: "You have a Purple Heart with two clusters?"

Kerry: "Yes, sir."

Symington: "You were wounded three times?"

Kerry: "Yes, sir."

Symington: "I have no further questions."

From the Gettysburg Times, April 23, 1971.

That pretty much says it all.
