Kerry’s 'Opposition' to Gay Marriage

After the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruling imposing gay marriage against the will of the people and the legislature, John Kerry told reporters on May 5, 2002, “I personally believe the court is not right…I don't support marriage. I never have. That's my position.” Yesterday, after President Bush announced his support of a Constitution Amendment banning gay marriage, Kerry reiterated that position, "I oppose gay marriage. I also oppose President Bush's attempt to amend the Constitution to ban gay marriage,"

Just exactly how does Kerry ‘oppose’ gay marriage? Kerry opposes, at least for now, amending the US Constitution. Also, Kerry was one of only 14 Senators who voted against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 1996, which would have banned federal recognition of gay marriage for the purpose of any federal benefits. In his opposition, Kerry went as far as calling the DOMA, "unconstitutional, unprecedented, unnecessary and mean-spirited bill," and compared the law to the 1960’s efforts in the south to criminalize interracial marriages.

Kerry has also attacked the federal efforts as an infringement on states rights. However, when Massachusetts tried to act on their own to ban gay marriage in 2002, Kerry signed a letter which stated, "We believe it would be a grave error for Massachusetts to enshrine in our Constitution a provision which would have such a negative effect on so many of our fellow residents."

So, Kerry is on record as believing a ban on gay marriage is not only bigoted and hateful, but is also 'unconstitutional' on the federal level and a ‘grave error’ on the state level. Just how exactly does Kerry oppose gay marriage, and which reported will be brave enough to ask the tough questions?

Can't wait for the media to stop Kerry from avoiding the tough questions. Of course, I am not exactly holding my breath.

Believe what I say, not what I do....or, at least believe what I say today, because it is politically expedient.

Clintonesque version of strongly held convictions.

Obviously, John Kerry does not have the backbone to be President. Of course, up until now, we've been having doubts about our current Commander in Chief. This year, it could be Skull-and-Bones man Kerry vs. Skull-and-Bones man Bush.

Unfortunately for the Dems, Kerry doesn't have the skills Clinton had to pull off the lies.

I don't see this as flip-flopping. I see this as an outright lie of what his real position is.

Kerry is not only missing backbone, but is also missing honesty and he is missing charisma. Besides, his liberal record will haunt him on every position he takes.

"I wouldn't choose to tamper with the Constitution for political purposes!"
And the crowd began to shout...
"I share the same opposition to gay marriage!"
..."Oongawa! Oongawa!"

Does the Constitutional Amendment Bush Supports "Ban" Gay Marriage?

The reporters are not asking the right questions (surprise, surprise). When are they going to say, "We know you oppose Gay Marriage, but what are you going to do about the Courts, and Mayors rewriting the laws that are in question?"

What the media seems to be trying to make the public believe,is that, you are either for Gay Marriage or against Gay Marriage, and not what truly is being played out. The courts are trying to legislate from the bench.

When will the media state clearly that because of the full faith and credit clause Sen. Kerry can't say he is for States rights in this issue, it is already too late for that. What would he direct his Attorney General (G_D forbid) to write in his opinion to SCOTUS in regards to the inevitable challenge?

I don't think Bush has proposed a specifically worded amendment, but blanketly endorsed any amendment that would ban gay marriage. I think Bush wants to keep the door open for civil unions though.
