ALTHOUGH LIFE-IMPAIRED,
PAUL WELLSTONE LEADS
CROWDED DEMO RACE
MORIBUND KERRY AND GRAHAM TRAIL
CERTIFIABLY DEAD WELLSTONE
By Kevin Flattery
WASHINGTON, March 1 -- Other dead candidates have won American electoral contests, but Paul Wellstone may be the first presidential candidate to enter the race dead, and take the lead. The reason is simple, according to political consultant Jerome Brown, Even dead, Wellstones twice as alive as, say, Dick Gephardt. And Kerry and Grahamtheyve each got one foot in the grave.
The other factor is honesty. Most Democrats these days roll over and play dead, but Paul Wellstones not playing. Hes the real thing, said Wellstone campaign manager Bart Nesselman.
And then theres the quality of the opposition. I mean look at that sanctimonious windbag Lieberman, said an anonymous political consultant, the mans a pro-labor George Bush. And Carole Mosley-Braun? What more does a person have to do to become unqualified to hold office?
The Wellstone campaign received an unexpected boost last week with the publication of the candidate's posthumous autobiography, "Paulie, I Hardly Knew Me." But according to Nesselman, "The Draft Wellstone movement has grown ever since the Minnesota Senator, um, went for a burton."
Admittedly, Wellstone wont be making any live appearances, but most polls say that voters dont care anyway. Its how they look on TV, says Fox TV producer Norm McCandless, and we have miles of Wellstone tape in the can.
The Pox tried in vain to reach Wellstone for comment, but his campaign office said that hes at an undisclosed location. According to communications director Janice Kerrick, though, I wouldnt rule out a statement from Paul in the near future.
