Note that you have a hamfest coming up THIS weekend. I'm envious. If you can spare the time, they are lots of fun. You can meet hams from the surrounding area, check out vendor displays of new equipment and often find a "flea market" in used equipment and parts.

All passengers, parcels and freight entering Britain will be screened for radioactivity to prevent terrorists smuggling weapons of mass destruction into the country, Jack Straw announced yesterday.

The Foreign Secretary said the Government had started screening traffic in British waters and airspace for radioactive materials and confirmed: "This will eventually cover all air, sea and Channel Tunnel traffic - passengers, parcels, vehicles, freight and containers."

I cannot reveal my source, or even describe the source, due to the extremely sensitive nature -- but this information is not correct.

U.S remains "gravely" concerned that one or more device(s) may have slipped through, but confidence is not high AQ has device or expertise to detonate.

It is accurate that select teams accross multiple angencies are working on these types of threats and chatter.

They won't be. According to Spaceweather.com, there wasn't much of a Coronal Mass Ejection, the burst of energetic particles that causes communications problems here on Earth.

CIA: AL QAIDA TURNS INTO COLLECTION OF GROUPS


WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The U.S. intelligence community has assessed that Al Qaida has been transformed into a collection of regional networks that operate autonomously.

In an updated assessment of the organization, the intelligence community has determined that Al Qaida has relinquished its control over many Islamic insurgency groups. Instead, Al Qaida permits its satellite organizations to designate targets and plan attacks.

"These far-flung groups increasingly set the agenda, and are redefining the threat we face," CIA director George Tenet said. "They are not all creatures of Bin Laden, and so their fate is not tied to his. They have autonomous leadership, they pick their own targets, they plan their own attacks."

In testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, Tenet said the Al Qaida network contains dozens of Sunni groups. Tenet cited Ansar Al Islam in Iraq the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and Salifiya Jihadiya in Morocco.

I strongly disagree with operating unlicensed. The licensing process is not very difficult if you have a desire to really learn about amateur radio. Plus, we don't know if things will get so bad that our licenses don't matter. I'm all for you buying a receiver so you can listen to the bands to hear what goes on. I tried to get involved in ARES/RACES twice in two differnt counties. Both times, I basically got pushed aside by the ruling clique. :(
