thecabal, the time it would take to get licensed is what will turn me away from pursuing a ham operator's license. I am not worried about anything else. For example, if I could get it in a month or two, fine. If not, then it is too drawn out as far as time for my purposes. I wanted to operate a ham for communication monitoring purposes only -- to know what's going on and to inform others. I do not wish to work alongside civil and gov. authorities in an emergency, however. In a pinch, yes, but that would not be my goal. The communications monitoring aspect is key for me. I guess I can get that with my scanner.

I know...I sure would like to know what else was on that GWB tape that was not released by the FBI and/or never aired on Arabic tv in the first place. We may find out more soon. Maybe. I say this about all the al qaeda communications, though. I really want to know what we missed on those tapes over the holidays... Sometimes, we don't find out too much more, unfortunately.

The contents of this book should take less than a week of effort. An Amazon review claims to have spent 1 week with this book and 10 minutes taking the test. The website to your local ham club will provide opportunities to take the test (schedules and locations).

Like some us hve been saying, the jihadis view all secular states as Satans. To them there is no difference between the Indians, Israelis, Russians and Americans.

It's one worldwide jihad.

Welcome to the Club.

US Coast Guard holding 500 Haitian migrants at sea
Reuters ^ | 2/26/04

Posted on 02/26/2004 11:59:31 AM CST by areafiftyone

MIAMI, Feb 26 (Reuters) - The U.S. Coast Guard is holding some 500 Haitian migrants on cutters at sea, the agency said on Thursday, in the first sign that large numbers of Haitians are trying to flee the turmoil in the Caribbean country.

FBI and immigration authorities were also investigating whether a freighter intercepted by the Coast Guard on Wednesday off Miami was possibly hijacked by some of the 21 Haitians on board.

This pisses me off but good! We outsource all of our jobs, we export more than import and this!

Reuters) - European Union Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy said on Thursday the EU would impose $200 million in economic sanctions on the United States beginning on Monday because of Congress' failure to repeal tax breaks declared illegal by the World Trade Organization. "The picture is now quite clear. Countermeasures will go into effect by next Monday," Lamy told the European American Business Council after meeting with the chairman of the House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee.

WHERE DID ALL THE JOBS GO?
Chronicles [Extra] ^ | February 24, 2004 | Paul Craig Roberts
Posted on 02/26/2004 5:09:59 PM CST by A. Pole

Since January 2001, a three-year period during which the economy has experienced one year of recession and two years of recovery, the U.S. economy has lost 2.6 percent of its private-sector jobs. These losses are not evenly distributed. Construction employment has declined by only 0.1 percent, and employment in oil and gas extraction by 0.7 percent.

Employment declines in manufacturing and knowledge jobs, however, have been dramatic.

Tables prepared by Charles McMillion of MBG Information Services from government data show employment in primary metals down 24 percent; machinery 21.6 percent; computer and peripheral equipment 28 percent; communications equipment 38.8 percent; semiconductors and electronic components 37 percent; electrical equipment and appliances 22.8 percent; textile mills 34.1 percent; apparel 37.3 percent; chemicals 8.3 percent; plastics and rubber products 13.8 percent; Internet publishing and broadcast 40 percent; telecommunications 19.4 percent; ISPs, search portals, data processing 22.6 percent; securities, commodity, investments 6.8 percent; computer systems design and related 17 percent.

I also take issue with every other nation mentioned! As for the Palestinians, we try to help them despite the fact that they and their leader are basically helpless.

I know what you mean, though. ;)

Hey, its a great day JP, I'm reading we're thinking of giving fast food jobs the title of MANUFACTURING JOBS. See, its an easy solution to the lack of manufacturing jobs - one we didn't think of. Back on topic - but you are right about that!

Adding to your Hawaii diver post:

Terrorism Task Force Searches Honolulu Harbor

Honolulu Harbor was the scene of an exhaustive search today after Coast Guard crews spotted suspicious activity in the water.

The Coast Guard launched an investigation after a watchman spotted a suspicious diver near a Coast Guard boat overnight.

That diver was never found, but the Coast Guard has called off its search.

And they say the harbor is safe.

A number of agencies were involved including Honolulu Police and the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Crews not only searched the bottom of every ship docked at Honolulu Harbor, but they also went onboard to investigate.

The investigation of a ship from Tokyo took about 20 minutes.

"We were told they're checking in case of a terrorist," said Yusaku Kokubu.

Kokubu is one of the college students on board the ship. It arrived in Honolulu last weekend.

The Coast Guard searched for hours from land, water, and the air to make sure the harbor was safe.

Mario Dalfonso is a crew member on another ship that was searched.

"They checked the dive lockers, seeing if any gear was wet," said Dalfonso.

In the end, the extensive search turned up nothing. http://www.khnl.com/Global/story.asp?S=1666779

Dirty bomb scare at Texas Medical Center

03:44 PM CST on Wednesday, February 25, 2004

By Amy Tortolani / 11 News

HOUSTON -- Houston police, FBI and a Hazmat team moved into the Texas Medical Center quickly after a man claimed he had chemicals to make dirty bombs and planned to detonate them.

Houston police and FBI agents cordoned off the area around Holcombe and Shamrock around 9:30 Tuesday night. A dirty bomb is an explosive that can be laced with nuclear or biological material to make it more deadly.

The suspect smiled and shook officers hands as they took him into custody.

Police said David O'Dell Ferguson claimed he had sulphur and bomb making materials in his pick-up truck and even asked a security guard for directions to the FBI building.

The security guard detained the suspect and called in police and firefighters.

Police said that 6 ounces of mercury were found in the man's truck along with two dogs.

Because of the seriousness of the threat, the DA is expected to charge the Freeport man with making a terroristic threat. http://www.khou.com/news/local/stories/khou040225_jt_dirtybombscare.280243a5.html

From your link:

The blast did not hurl a substantial coronal mass ejection (CME) toward Earth, so there will be no big geomagnetic storms as a result of this event.
