THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST.. (A HIT OR A MISS?).. Live thread!

Contrary to popular media pronouncements, the first of the commercial showing of this long awaited, landmark, and controversial film has already debuted and the misconceptions that the fate of this endeavor hangs in the balance.. That is HOGWASH.. The Passion of the Christ is on the brink of a record breaking opening, in spite of the limited available screens, and the all out, and outragous efforts on the part of the National Media's near unanimous rejection, and the Hollywood establishment roadblocks to stymie this motion picture and it's brilliant and courageous director/producer..

I just receive a call from friends that attended a church sponsored midday showing of the movie with more than 850 of their fellow flock. The collective response was "it was sobering and breathtaking, and they existed with a profound feeling of moral inadequacy".

I toyed with the idea of accepting an invitation to book a private showing at a local theater for this weekend, however after calling a few local churches to help fill the seats I discovered that all (I call 12) of the parishes and neighborhood churches had already secured their own private dates with sellout crowds.. Every one of them had sold the seats within a day of their announcements... I just may book a threater in three weeks for all of my friends and family, that wish to watch it again, and again..

I will state this again, this thread is about the movie, the religious discussion (including my own posts) belong in the Religious forums.

I will personalize this for you. I do not want to stand before God and say that I condemned anyone for his/her religous practices. I feel that saying hurtful things about someone's relationship with God is not my place. You and Mercy can do whatever you like. Perhaps I am wrong, but I FEEL slamming someone for they way they show they care about God is rude. If someone came to your house and condemned the way your raised your kids, you would be offended. I am offended when someone Catholic bashes (insert Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran etc.) in that same way.

Perhaps if you prayed for those whom you do not believe are right instead of slamming them, you may get farther. More flies are gotten with honey than vinegar. Maybe if those of you who are "right" prayed for us who are not, God would find it in his heart to give us a revelation to your way of thinking. Or maybe not.

Hogwash. Christ was offered to Jews AND Gentiles both. Those Jews who chose to accept that Christ was the Savior were then called "Christians". Present day Judaism is a rejection of Christianity, not the other way around. The Catholic church views the Jews as God's chosen children while Christians are adopted children - and the Catholic church no longer attempts to convert Jews (officially).

Good morning sweetie.. I know we should not have gone on a school night because we never do anything like this .. but we have been waiting so long we couldn't wait another day.. I still have tickets for this evening.. I haven't decided if we want to see it again so soon.. developing.. :)

We could hardly sleep when we returned home.. we had to talk about it until the wee small hours.. I am still sleepy but invigorated and my son when to school after only 4 hour sleep.. he was wide awake.. go figure.. :)

Honestly, when I watched some of the violence on the teasers on tv, I was a little relieved that I did not have a ticket. Then a heard a local lady on the radio this morning who said she is mixed with her emotions about going to see this today. She said she is excited and scared. "I have been preparing myself to see someone I love tortured and killed for 2 hours."

I now know that I must see it. I must put myself through this to understand what He did for me. Actually, I am scared myself. I turn away from injections on tv!

The most profound thing I came away with, when I finally caught my breath, was the total brutality of the suffering that Jesus endured, and the way we felt watching it.. There wasn't a moment that I succeeded in convincing myself that this was only a movie, I'm a half-baked actor after all.. In our eyes, we talked about it after we returned home,.. Gibson put us there, with Him enduring every horror, each lash... words cannot adequately describe it..

Thanks to Mel Gibson's masterpiece "The Passion of the Christ" my faith has been reborn

Good morning to all. As you have read we viewd the Passion last night.. I am thinking slowly today because I am still digesting what I saw. The movie was brutal, it was beautiful, it brought to the surface every emotion that I can think of. It has made me ashamed that I have not been more of a Christian to the people around me. Today I am not the same person that I was yesterday and I hope that I will have the faith to stay that way the rest of my life. I cried. I don't know how a human could not, watching what went Christ went through and what Mary went through as his mother. I thank Mel Gibson for such a gift to all Christians.

I totally agree with your assessment. I saw the film last night and it has helped me truly realize my faith. After watching what Jesus endured, there is only one explanation as to why His disciples would risk the same torture by spreading the word…He is the Son of God. This film is proof that a picture paints a thousand words.

Note about violence: Yes the violence is intense at times; however, I was expecting a lot worse. Much of the violence plays out in your mind, as you hear all the sounds and see the aftermath of the abuse Jesus took, which is brutal, to say the least. And yes, some of the scenes are graphic, but the impact is not that you see every lashing, but rather, the bloody pulp they made of Christ.

My boys are 15, and 17.. They are ardent fans of classic film-making, and were moved beyond words.. we all sat there in total silence with most of the folks after it ended, then there were only hushed sounds and weeping throughout the theater.. They are going with me for ashes later this afternoon, they asked me to wait for them before I went to church.. Something that hasn't happened in years..
