Former Georgia Rep. Billy McKinney, a fiery Democrat who lost his northwest Atlanta seat two years ago, will try again to win his old district, he said Monday.
McKinney, 77, was among several state Democratic titans who was upset in the elections of 2002. McKinneys daughter, former U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney, also lost that year in what was considered a safe district in DeKalb County. Billy McKinney has been in the House for 30 years and was one of its first black members.
McKinney visited the House Monday and said he had his sights set on his replacement, Democratic Rep. John Noel, a white lawmaker who represents the majority-black district. McKinney called him a frivolous legislator with no name recognition.
McKinney argues that Republican crossover voting in his primary race against Noel led to his defeat.
Who knows John Noel? Hes just a sweet tea man, said McKinney, referring a bill Noel sponsored last year to make require restaurants that serve iced tea to also serve sweet tea. Everybody knows Billy McKinney.
Noel quickly volleyed back after finding out that McKinney was planning a challenge. Noel said McKinney would lose again because he became out of touch with the voters.
Unlike my former opponent, I actually went out and talked to the constituents. Now Im up here representing them, Noel said.
Another powerful former legislator, Charles Walker of Augusta, is also looking to regain his seat. The former Senate Democratic Leader was upset by Republican Randy Hall in 2002 but is planning to run again. Like McKinney, Walker was thought to be in a safe district when he lost.

Oh, Billy McKinney's got 'name-recognition' alrighty!
People see that name and instantly recognize him as the only person around who's a bigger whack-job than his daughter Cynthia!

Oh yes! The McKinney files. What fun that was.
Good thing we saved them. Never know when they may come in handy.
