I have recently been named as the Webmaster for the OSU College Republicans. The last Webmaster didn't ever update the Web site, and he left the College Republicans in a bad situation.

He left without giving up the password for the Web site. Now he won't return their calls. So while we are attempting to track down the password for the Web site, I am still scripting out what I want it to look like.

I am leaning towards The Auburn College Republicans Web site theme and look. We've visited several, and are still deciding. Here is our old Web site.

It hasn't been updated, and won't be until we can track down the password. We believe the old Webmaster became a Democrat. Anyways, if anybody here has any HTML tips, and or tricks please let me know.

Free Republic has really helped me learn HTML in the past couple years, but I know there is a lot I still don't know. The easy stuff like Marquees, Font Size, Font Color, links, pictures. I know that stuff.

I have managed to find a few pages with some amazing script.

Do any of you all know of Web pages which look really good or use a certain font, script, etc that you like? Better yet, are any of you College Republicans from around the country that might be able to give me some ideas?

Here is the Young Democraps page. It appears not to have been updated either. I am planning on making our College Republicans page, informative, entertaining, and downright Conservative!

I also liked The Young Republicans of Virginia Web site. I understand that if you put too many pictures, etc on your Web site it will become heavy and won't load fast.

But..I'll have plenty of links. Drudge, Rush, Free Republic, Townhall. Plenty of pics from our meetings. I've also made a message board for the College Republicans, which I will link to from the main page.

Another great thing I'll put on it is a place where people can donate money if they would like. We also sell T-shirts. We can put pictures of them up as well.

Anyways. Good HTML info...besides the Sandbox.

THANKS!

So HTML/Java is the best to use? That seems to be what most people are saying. Thats good because those are the two that I know most about.

I know a little html. You can see some of the things I've done on my profile, and I have some other things I can show you if you'd like to see them. If you don't find a real 'guru' I'll be happy to help you as much as I can.

I don't think informational sites need much Java. I consider rollovers unnecessary most of the time. Just more images to load. With a stylesheet you can make text change appearance, color, etc. on mouseovers without using Java. Everyone to his own taste, but I prefer fast.

http://www.htmlgoodies.com was a good learning experience for me. Step-by-step instructions with explanations. Maybe you are past that point.

1) When using javascript, also provide an alternative for those that do not enable scripting. Otherwise, visitors cannot surf your site properly.
2) Avoid cluttering interactive pages. Simplicity is key to the user's interaction (see google.com)
3) Avoid posting email address as foo@bar.com as that will lead to enormous spam
4) Avoid navigation only through javascript menus (again, non scripted interaction would otherwise not work)
5) Avoid images that are excessive in size. It is a bandwidth killer and generally does not provide additional benefit.
6) Clearly state a terms of use page.
7) Keep track of robots that autoindex your site. It is your information and you should be able to control it. For example, cyveilance.com's spider is particularly nasty in that it ignores robots.txt and pounds your system.
8) Get and use a good weblog analyzer to track traffic, and find errors.
9) Try to provide users with latest information up front. Nothing worse than having to reread the same crap that you read yesterday, just trying to find what is new.
10) Keep reading freerepublic, and get your friends to participate.

Good Luck

The site is really funny. Often, the pages he labels as "sucky" are changed before the viewer has a chance to check it out. Word gets out :-)

I agree with you about Flash. When it first came out, I installed it and it crashed my machine. I had a real mess on my hands trying to get my system back to where it was pre-Flash. Even today I refuse to install it. I wonder how many other people were also turned off by such programs and refuse to download *anything* for fear of having their machine crashed.

Oh. I see what you mean with the e-mail address.

Instead of actually having the words of your e-mail address shown...just make the words say "e-mail me"

You don't need to buy anything. Forget the editing programs. You can make a very respectable website using HTML and JAVA. Even JAVA isn't necessary for a nice site. Your aim is to inform, right? If that's the case, that's all people want... info on a fast-loading page.

You win the prize for the best BUMP graphic I've ever seen!

Did you do that in Flash or Photoshop?
