Bush's Approval Rating Slips In New Hampshire More Voters Would Choose Kerry, Edwards

POSTED: 10:58 am EST February 19, 2004

DURHAM, N.H. -- A new poll shows President George W. Bush's approval ratings in New Hampshire have fallen to their lowest levels since his election.

In a University of New Hampshire Granite State Poll conducted this week, 47 percent of New Hampshire adults said they approve of the job Bush is doing as president, 48 percent disapprove and 5 percent are neutral. That's down from a high of 71 percent in April and down 9 percentage points since October.

Looking ahead to the November election, 38 percent of likely voters said they would vote for Bush, and 53 percent said they would vote for Democrat John Kerry. In a matchup with Democrat John Edwards, 51 percent said they would vote for Edwards and 37 percent said they would vote for Bush.

Pollster Andrew Smith said Bush is in a tough spot, but the large number of Republicans in the state should pull his approval ratings up as the election approaches.

The telephone poll of 511 adults was conducted Feb. 4 through Feb. 12 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

We have same day registration, so this isn't as inaccurate as you'd automatically think. Can Kerry inspire all of these adults to show up? Maybe.

I don't care about this poll. Bush is winning New Hampshire. It is NOT a liberal state like those around it.

Not so fast. In 2000, NH voted 273,559 (Bush); 266,348 (Gore); 22,188(Nader): and 2,165 (Buchanan). Thank God for Nader.

In 1996, Clinton beat Dole 50% to 40%; in 1992 Clinton beat Bush 38.9% to 37.6%; and in 1988 Bush beat Dukakis 62% to 36%.

The bottom line is that NH is a toss-up state. It has changed since the days of Reagan as more retirees come in from Taxachusetts and the rest of the Northeast. No income tax. A northern Florida. Bush will have to work hard to keep NH in the GOP column.

I noticed that they polled the same number of Democrats as Republicans in the head-to-head, and then a much larger number of unenrolled.

That's really not how New Hampshire looks politically. Bush may have problems in N.H. but this poll is crap.
