Howard Dean returned home to Burlington, Vermont, early on Wednesday carrying a decision to quit his presidential campaign but remain in the race for the nomination, the Los Angeles Times reported in Wednesday's editions.
"Though Dean is not going to formally drop out of the race, he is going to stop campaigning," a Dean aide told the newspaper.
"The move would allow his supporters to continue to vote for him in the upcoming primaries and have a say at the Democratic National Convention in July," The Times reported.

It could be about qualifying for federal campaign money---we know that when the government becomes involved, traditional motivation is often set aside.

Who cares?
He did the republicans a favor by driving the dems so far to the left they've gone off the cliff.

I'll give you 3 names and you tell me if they stuck it to their former party; Pat Buchanan, Ralph Nader, Jumpin' Jim Jeffords.

In an interview on the Today show, Howard Fineman just stated that Dean considered ending his campaign after New Hampshire and throwing his support behind Edwards.
Dean likes what Edwards stands for and really doesn't like Kerry.

I thought Dean had foregone fed matching funds. Then again, we are talking about the gubmint.

I believe that as long as a candidate is put into nomination, the delegates have to vote for that person on the first ballot. Afterward, they are free.

So, I hearing you saying that a candidate who drops out cannot pledge his delegates to another candidate.
For example, when Clark endorsed Kerry that does not mean the Clark's delegates now MUST vote for Kerry, but instead, they are already free to roam.

As Kerry's anti-war activities catch up with him (no pun intended) and Americans learn that that "cute" John Edwards is an ambulance chaser, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that McAwful has told Gephardt to stand by - especially if they think GWB is unbeatable.

He is just waiting for Kerry to self destruct, then he will run again. For now he has to go and intial his papers at the court house by court order.

If the Good Lord wants to have all of us conservatives rupture a gut, Howard Dean would endorse Edwards. We can only pray.

The press ruined him, then they sat on Kerrys dalliance.

SNIFF! We're losing Howard Dean but his SCREAM will live on forever.
YEEEEEE-AHHHHHH!
It's amazing. People I know who never heard of Howard Dean are all familiar with the famous Dean Scream. It's become a cultural icon. A lasting legacy. I hear it a lot on the Howard Stern show but also lots of other radio shows as well. A week ago I heard a funny rap type tune on FM using the Dean Scream.
I would LOVE to see that Dean Scream incorporated into a Superbowl commercial next year. Here is how it would go:
(Howard Dean holding a bottle of Buddweiser)
DEAN (screaming to a crowd): I love my Budweiser beer. They can't take it away from me! I'll drink my Bud in Illinois, in Ohio, in Oklahoma, in Wisconsin, in New Mexico, in California, in North Dakota, and I'll even drink it in Washington, D.C.....YEEEEEE-AHHHHHHH!!!!
I guarantee you such a commercial would get the MOST attention of all the Superbowl commercials. Buddweiser beer, are you listening?
YEEEEEE-AHHHHHH!

Lose the Wisconsin reference, and that commercial would be a winner (I'm a bit partial to Miller, seeing it's made here; though when I can, I'll drink Leinenkugel's or Labatt's Maximum Ice).
