JOHN and TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE

Some thoughts on the Kerry Candidacy ...

If your name is TED KENNEDY and you know-because of your conduct at Chappaquiddick-the American people would never accept you as a presidential candidate; but you feel entitled to control of the nation, because it's your "family legacy"...watcha gonna do,Bad Boy ??

What you do is pick out a surrogate: someone you can run for office; someone who will be your puppet; someone whose strings you can pull, and pull, and pull....

It helps that your surrogate is already a Wannabee; that his parents came as close to naming him "JFK" as they dared;that he admired your late brother,to the point of trying to model his military service in Viet Nam on that of JFK in WWII.(Riverine Patrol = PT-109,a generation later !)

As a very powerful Senator, you may have been able to give your surrogate's military career a little "boost" here and there: a little discreet influence to turn a Purple Heart into a Bronze Star; a possible reprimand or court martial into a Silver Star...

A little more influence might yield an early discharge,so your surrogate could "cash in" on the anti-war fever sweeping the country (a fever you contributed to in no small way),and rub elbows with the "right people" - Jane Fonda, the up-and-coming media people, the new members of the Hollywood Left, the self-idolizing academics.

Now your surrogate is in the Senate;and, for 20 years,he performs the way he is supposed to;ie: he does what you tell him to do-and a bit more.

Finally,it's time ! The Clinton machine, while still powerful,is not what it used to be,and most of the candidates are weak. (John Edwards looks useful-gotta get that Southern vote !-and might be retained as a VP candidate-much as Lyndon B. Johnson was retained by the Kennedy machine-way back when.)

Now,at last, it's time for John and Ted's Excellent Adventure !!!

John Kerry is the Frog on Teddy's forehead. When Ted went to the doctor, the doctor asked, "What the heck is that?" Kerry replied, "Well it started out as a wart on my butt!"

No offense to frogs was intended.

Nobody is Teddy's puppet. Ted is a legendary dullard, the dud brother. He couldn't pull the strings on a pot roast.

Underestimating an opponent as savvy as TK is not an option -unless you are looking forward to a massive victory for Kerry.

I can think of a lot of adjectives to describe Ted Kennedy, and "savvy" is nowhere on the list. He is where he is because his name is Kennedy.
