As you can see on this thread, Canada is a lost cause. I remembered seeing a news story last year about US liberals wanting to move to Canada for its loopy left-wing policies, our Australian friends remarked drily "Have they got space to accept also all of our chardonnay socialists?"

'As you can see on this thread, Canada is a lost cause.'

How is that?

"A generous social-welfare system, lax immigration laws, infrequent prosecutions, light sentencing, and long borders and coastlines offer many points and methods of entry that facilitate movement to and from various countries, particularly to the United States," the report says.

"These factors combine to make Canada a favored destination for terrorists and international crime groups."

Unfortunately yes, The Canadians will accept anyone into their country legally, as long as they make it to Canadian soil by land, sea, or air.

Sunsong seems to have a problem with Canadians. I am very embarrassed by her rudeness even though I believe she has alterior motives here on FR and doesn't represent most of us.

I appreciate the friendship we have with those like us in Canada. We in the western states have more in common with western Canada, then we do with the northeaster part of the U.S.

It is my view that Canada and the U.S are more than just two countries with a common border. Many Canadians do not like GWB, ( I am not one of them)and our liberal democrat eastern Canadian majority who constantly toady to Quebec whining, have made their feelings known, much to the chagrin of Conservatives on both sides of the border. For example, 60% of English Canadians supported sending troops to Iraq while Quebec was unanimously against. Chretien is French. This in not an indictment of America or Americans, it is just politics and reflective of the unniqueness of Canadian politics and the conservative/liberal cultural divide that transcends our borders, heightened by the events of 9/11. The Canadian election campaigning now underway illustrates two things. 1) Canadians are rapidly shifting to the right. 2) The same issues, SSM and the gay rights agenda, Iraq, misssle sheild defense etc. are impacting voter decision making on both sides of the border. These issues will come and go and while there will always be some things we disagree on, as you so rightly point out, the ties that bind us are far stronger than the isssues that divide us. Sunsong is entitled to her opinion, the shallowness of her opinions is illustrative of a person with no first hand knowledge other than what she reads on these pages. Many of us have close friends and relations in both countries and know the real relationship is as strong as ever. My son was in WTC on 9/11 and barely escaped. My grandkids are American as are some of my closest friends in this world, I believe I know what I am talking about. In closing, Albertans feel closer to Western America than Eastern Canada. Cheers.

The whole world is divided.

We have no room to talk, after all the U.S elected Clinton twice.

As far as border control goes, the U.S has no room to talk. I believe both should have started shutting down the borders when 911 happened. For those who talk about terror cells in Canada which I am sure there are , have they paid attention to the news down here?

You might find me complaining about trade with Canada under Nafta. Idaho,s agriculture has suffered because what we call Canadian dumping products at such a cheap price down here. Even our Idaho potatoes were greatly affected. I live in timber industry area that was hurt greatly by Canadian timber.

That is a whole nother topic which I am not smart enough to articulate well.

I live close to western Canada, and know that cities like Spokane get alot of business from Canada.

My husbands father was born in North Bay, Ontario into a French family. We spent a couple weeks up there tracing his family history. It was beautiful.

the shallowness of her opinions is illustrative of a person with no first hand knowledge other than what she reads

Pretty much sums her up.

It is refreshing to hear an objective exchange. For the record, I live in Eastern Canada ... east of Quebec. My feelings on Bush are mixed. However, I am not anti-American and I don't "toady" to Quebec. I've stated in other threads that I do not support our current government and hope the upcoming election will clean house. I am disgusted with how our military is being ignored and how Canada is being portrayed by both our government and our media ... they just don't get it. As for sunsong, I concur.

I live in Idaho, but have lived and traveled all of the states. People think very differently the further east you go, but California, Western Oregon, etc are as leftist as they come.

I too was pretty angry with France, and tried to boycott the products from there. But, I know a few conservative French people from my online family history search. Even those people seem quite arrogant about what?, I’ll never know.

My ancestors escaped France with their lives because of their religion. France lost a lot of smart people, but it was to America’s benefit.

After watching Linda Vestors special on borders, terror cells, etc last night, I am very disgusted with the U.S. as well as Canada, and Mexico.

Don't know why some want to blame Canada for letting people through our border, that’s our job.

I don't understand why my government hasn't guarded our border! Any simple man on the street would tell you how important that was after 911, but why, why, why haven't they done it.

My feelings on Bush are mixed too, but I will campaign hard, and vote for him. I consider the democrats to be evil through and through. Bush at least is right on many important issues, except this border thing and I am not so totally sure he is that wrong about his foreign worker plan. Its what he hasn’t done up until now that bothers me.
