This article appeared almost two months ago but I did not find it on FR. Since it was published before Bush's immigration plan was announced, I thought it might have more interest now.
A comment about mycobacterium tuberculosis from another site:
Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB), a highly contagious bacterial infection which primarily affects pulmonary organs and lymphatic vessels. On a global scale, approximately one-third of the population is infected, displaying characteristic or symptomatic tuberculosis, ultimately resulting in an approximate 12.5 percent mortality rate.... Although instances of tuberculosis were previously controlled in the United States, the recent appearance of antibiotic-resistant mycobacterial strains has created concern throughout the public health community. A lack of preventive medical action and an absence of sanitation in developing countries resulted in global outbreaks of tuberculosis, markedly prevalent in immunocompromised systems unable to combat the progression of the mycobacterium.

I'm not sure if this is simply scare mongering or if this is a real threat. I did view a program about this on tv some time back and it seemed to be a real concern, especially in the case of MDR-TB. I do know that it is possible to be infected and not know for possibly many years. It is very much like a ticking time bomb.

(Medicare) Bill includes $1 billion for immigrant care.
Yes, it's time to fix the problem......time to control our borders.... But.....in the meantime, do we want anybody (Americans, legal aliens, illegal aliens, foreign visitors,...pets, cows,...) roaming our neighborhoods with diseases like MDR=TB, SARS, Hepatitis A, B & C, tuberculosis, leprosy and Chagas Diseasebird flu, AIDS, mad cow disease, etc? Illegals shop in the same stores that we do, walk the same streets that we do...live in a canyon and alley near us.... That scenario can be much more dangerous and costly than $1 billion. Yes? No? If No, then ignore this post.

You're welcome. But I don't think it's a repost. I could not find it in the FR archives. Figured it was too important to pass over. The problem with the TB "epidemic," it won't be sudden with warning. It is of the silent type where people can become infected yet the TB remains dormant for years only to be "activated" by an illness or immune deficiency (i.e., as what can occur during cancer treatment or serious illness).

Bedbugs have made a comeback as well. They were stamped out in the US, but thanks to lax immigration policies, they're back.

But this terror is a silent invasion
A "terror".... kay. Actually, I'm more afraid of terrorist cells comprised of Muslim extremists... those few individuals that are mixed up in a big soup of illegal immigrants that are only here to work. I'd rather document the ones that are providing for themselves and boot the ones with a criminal history or relying on social services. It's a nice bonus then that they'll have to answer the medical screening questions to get the worker permit.
That will leave much fewer illegals and Bush said his plan requires punishing employers that hire them. The last illegals will stick out and be much more obvious in our society...

a la Michael Savage... With political correctness eventually comes a loss even of self-protection. The common sense intelligence already long-gone.

Bush said his plan requires punishing employers that hire them.
Then he'd better get started. He has the worst record in history. Under his watch, only 3 employers were prosecuted. Even Clinton prosecuted 537! I think it's mere schmooze.

Make sure in the flame wars about Hispanics to point them to the actual proposal, they can't handle the truth.

Excerpt from the Bush speech because of your fear of lax immigration policy... Thanks.
Our reforms should be guided by a few basic principles. First, America must control its borders. Following the attacks of September the 11th, 2001, this duty of the federal government has become even more urgent. And we're fulfilling that duty.
For the first time in our history, we have consolidated all border agencies under one roof to make sure they share information and the work is more effective. We're matching all visa applicants against an expanded screening list to identify terrorists and criminals and immigration violators. This month, we have begun using advanced technology to better record and track aliens who enter our country -- and to make sure they leave as scheduled. We have deployed new gamma and x-ray systems to scan cargo and containers and shipments at ports of entry to America. We have significantly expanded the Border Patrol -- with more than a thousand new agents on the borders, and 40 percent greater funding over the last two years. We're working closely with the Canadian and Mexican governments to increase border security. America is acting on a basic belief: our borders should be open to legal travel and honest trade; our borders should be shut and barred tight to criminals, to drug traders, to drug traffickers and to criminals, and to terrorists.
