I think there is some truth to what you say about southern liberals feeling the need to establish their bonafides with the northern liberals that they so want to be.
But then there are the John Edwards types. He goes on and on about his working-class roots, and small town values as a deliberate way to try and curry the support of all the small-town, working-class Southerners who on net disagree with him on virtually every social issue. He hides his liberalism behind a cloak designed to keep people from noticing just how far left he is on so many issues. Believe me, when he ran for Senate in 1998 he didn't bother telling the voters that he favors amnesty for illegal aliens, or that he would oppose conservative judges, etc.

Edwards walks that line hoping, usually with success, that the voters won't be paying attention and can't be bothered to look past a sound bite. His type bets heavily that only his masters bother and that the mass will simply react to nice sounds.Sound right to you?

Thanks for bumping this. As the world's policeman (a job that fell into our lap?) I envision two types of cops: one who actively searches for crimes in progress and the other who responds to calls for help. I believe we became the former after 9-11.
Leaving behind a little democracy dosen't seem too harsh a punishment for those 'kingdoms' setting new lows in human rights such as Iraq, when it puts other petty tyrants on notice.
If our experiment in the Middle East bears fruit, we may find ourselves spending more quality time in the donut shop as many of the world's recent troubles will take care of themselves.

Thanks for the bump. I read the "News Analysis" of this speech back in February. The actual speech is so much better. Printed, bookmarked, distributed and catalogued!
