I would have reported it. Why take the chance?
To: RightFighter
Anyone stupid enough to comment multiple times in public of threats against the President deserves to be thrown in jail for the night, and any of the consequences that go with it.
To: RightFighter
Your friend should have called the authorities and turned this man in as "a possible threat to the life of the President of the United States."
And that's how it would read on the arret report, as they carted his liberal ass away. People like him would then thankyou; jail time in protest of America is a badge of honor and a chick magnet in the colleges.

Well you can trust that the Secret Service is on this now. We have had a few FR members "visited" because of things they have said here.
I understand your friends reluctance to say anything more than he has, but a threat against the President is not to be taken lightly.

Your friend should take pre-emptive action and eliminate the threat to the president. Permanently.

Turn him in immediately. It might be just a stupid remark. And then, it might not be.
Anyone who would make a remark like that in the present atmosphere in this country is either stupid or has evil intent or both. Err on the side of caution.

Report it. However, there's always a chance that someone may be on their way to your house right now for more information...

Sounds like this guy is begging for attention.
I'd give him some :)
To: RightFighter
This guy should be reported immediately.
He may not face criminal prosecution, but at a minimum he may end up being carted off to the nearest Federal building for a "visit" with the Secret Service that lasts for the duration of the President's stay there tomorrow.

That was a direct threat to the Presidents life! Of course he did the right thing. The police should have been notified and they should have notified the secret service. He probably wouldn't have went to jail but he would have been watched. Nuts like this shouldn't be spouting off!

You are right when you say it's one of those things you don't joke about. You probably are not an expert on presidential threats so don't wonder or guess. Notify the USSS yourself immediately.
To: RightFighter
Your friend having confided in you still hasn't done the right thing, but you can. Use this to report such events using the internet:
https://tips.fbi.gov/
You can also call your nearest field office
http://www.fbi.gov/contact/fo/fo.htm
Although we'd all like to believe the FBI or Homeland Defense monitors FR, the fact is there are entirely too many FBI agents and HD investigators posting stuff here for that to happen. So, you'll have to get in touch with them.
You can rat out your buddy by name, address and phone number too. That way you become a "witness" rather than being somebody reporting a tip.
Good luck.

This guy should have been turned into the FBI right away. With the current political/global climate his comments are not funny at all.
