Bush Takes on Big Senate Spending - Statement on Pres’ Responsible Highway and Transit Budget

Statement Regarding the President’s Responsible Highway and Transit Budget

The President has charted a course for cutting the budget deficit in half in five years. We must fund our priorities of winning the war on terror, defending the homeland, and creating jobs -- and we must hold the line on spending in other areas.

The President's budget proposes a responsible $256 billion in highway and transit spending, which represents a 21 percent increase over the previous six-year period and a responsible approach to improve highway safety and curb congestion. The President also has made clear that he will oppose a highway bill that increases the gas tax, taps the general Treasury, or hides the true cost to taxpayers.

With passage of an excessive $318 billion highway funding bill, the Senate today missed an important opportunity to rein in spending. It is disappointing that the bill significantly exceeds the President's budget and fails to meet the responsible principles outlined by the Administration.

The President is committed to work with Congress to pass a highway bill that adheres to principles of spending restraint. The President's senior advisers will recommend a veto of any highway bill that includes excessive spending and violates these principles, including the bill passed by the Senate.

Too many of us have been giving Dubyuh holy heck fer his big spending ways, so to retain our credibility we oughtta be right there supporting him when he gets our message and attempts to restrain spending.

The RightWing of the Republican Party is gettin' woo'd when Dubyuh takes a stand like this, so it behooves us to stay woo-able!!

"Deficits are far more conservative in Principle, that Surpluses. "

Surpluses tell people it's time to lower taxes. Deficits mean we have a government spending out of control. The MASSIVE deficits and debt we're ringing up right now cause giant payments just on the interest for that debt.

RNC Chairman, Ed Gillespie on Meet the Press with the frothing-at-the-mouth Timmy Russert. I hope Ed is up to the interview. Haley Barbour always handled Russert.

I appreciate you posting your thoughts. Since certain ones who've posted are unwilling to do that, it solidifies the accurracy of my perceptions as to their real motives and agenda.

Well we've never elected someone who tried to control government spending, except maybe Reagan. Clinton did not lower taxes, but at least Clinton tried to reform the welfare system and spending growth was slower than it has been under Bush because he was restrained by a Republican congress. Bush has created an amazingly huge government program that if it came from a democrat would outrage conservatives. But for many "conservatives" all that matters is party loyalty and I guess standing on principle doesn't win votes.

You said : "so to retain our credibility we oughtta be right there supporting him when he gets our message and attempts to restrain spending."

I meant that other posters on this and other threads, don't seem to share that spirit of fair treatment towards Bush on much of any topic, which makes me suspicous of what their real motives on FR may be.

Well, if you ain't willin' to offer the carrot after you've demonstrated the whip, you deserve to be disappointed with the achievements of those in yer care...and I definitely have a decided preference to see that George Dubyuh succeeds in his drive towards conservatism. YEE-HAWWW every time he promotes fiscal discipline in his decisions, and Howl like a Ban-Shee every time he sells his soul to the Gods of BigGuv'mentLib'ralsim!!

"...which makes me suspicious of what their real motives on FR may be."

Plenty of Sheeple on this website suspect me and you fer our lack of conservative principle, I'm sure...but we mustn't allow their ignorance to cloud our judgment. You cn pretty well tell the Disruptors buy their unwillingness to seek solutions that benefit our long-term objectives. As fer the rest of us, we're just along feer the ride!!

People like me eh? I love you too. BTW, since you are so well-versed in the powers of the president, could you tell me how many bills Dubya has actually vetoed?

Sure, if Dubya does right, I'll praise him. Heck, I even praised Clinton when he signed welfare reform though, of course, I never "supported" him in a broader sense

. The point here is that all of this is a drop in the pocket compared to the budget-busting Medicare Bill. Let's keep things in perspective here: we are talking about the comparison of pennies versus dollars/
