Oscar Bosses Promise Not To Cut Political Remarks (My title: Is the fix in for Penn?)
IMDb.com ^ | 2-12-04

Oscar producer Joe Roth has promised nominees the planned five-second delay in the telecast will not be used to cull any controversial political remarks. The America's Sweethearts director has been forced to implement a delay between the live ceremony and the broadcast following Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake's breast-baring Super Bowl performance on February 1. But Roth insists any repeat of Michael Moore's anti-war speech last year would not be left on the cutting room floor. He says, "At the nominees luncheon yesterday, I spoke with the nominees and just said that, when they come up, they're all under this microscope, unfortunately, because of these events a couple weeks ago. But it only applies to the use of profanity or nudity."

British actor Jude Law is appealing to the Academy Of Motion Arts And Sciences to award Sean Penn the Best Actor Oscar this year. Law is nominated in the same category as Penn, for his performance in romantic civil war epic Cold Mountain - but he is happy to stand aside, if the Mystic River star can pick up his first Academy Award. Law says, "I'm immensely proud to be in the category I'm in. There are actors in that category who I have been inspired by from a very, very young age - and to be amongst them is extraordinary. I've always loved Sean Penn's work. He's someone I've respected and looked up to and admired for years and years and years, and I think it should be his year."

His year, like last year was Michael Moore's year. I think that the fix is in for a big Bush hate-fest this year.

I swear, I must be the only woman alive who despises award shows. I can't remember the last time I watched one.

I got really turned off of them when they let them turn into DNC political rallies.

I just wish that some conservative actor would get up and make a speech about the 2nd amendment and let the nation see how little his rights of dissent are worth in Follywood.

Will these silly ninnies grow up?

No one cares what they voice as their opinions. Everyone has opinions. One has to allow, however, for incoming verbal lobs after expressing said opinions which is something the ninnies do not understand.

The five second delay is to prevent air pollution from profanities and obscenities uttered by celebrities whose vocabularies are so limited that their fund of words is best expressed in fingerpaint, fecal-wall smearing, and crayons..

These arrogant, dumb @ss actors sure have an overblown view of their own importance. So Penn gets to have his rant. I doubt it will sway public opinion anymore than his much publicized "fact finding" mission to Iraq. Penn is probably the least likeable lead actor there is. Critics love him, the average movie-goer doesn't; he hasn't had a commercially successful film in years. He peaked as Jeff Spicoli...

Joe Roth's state, ment is an open invitation to all of the Bush Bashing actors and actresses to get their political speeches. ready. It doesnt matter to me if they wish to anger half their public thats their business, I wont be watching anyway.

Penn has been a Hollywood outcast but I suppose he will forget all of the bad blood if he finally becomes part of the club. He will think they have finally seen the light instead of realizing that his politics, not his acting, are as likely responsible.

This will be the first time that Penn has attended the Oscars. I cannot help but see the connection that he chooses to go, for the first time, in the same year that W is up for re-election.

I agree with you. A few years ago, after not being nominated for some film he did, he called the whole thing a sham.

I would rather watch my toenails being removed than any awards show.

Oscar Bosses Promise Not To Cut Political Remarks

THIS, is news? For God's sake they GAVE an Oscar (Michael Moore) for a political statement of a "documentary".

I don't know when Hollyweird decided that acceptance speeches at awards shows were ok to use as a platform for political statements but, quite frankly, I'm getting tired of it and the bozos in Hollyweird.

The "Lets-Give-Ourselves-A-Pat-On-The-Back-And-An-Award" Shows were less offensive when the actors stuck to thanking their parents, their mates, their dogs, their secret lovers, everyone who ever set foot in the sound stage their movie was filmed in, the city of Los Angeles and the little old lady from Pasadena. The shows were boring, but the winners came off as being "cute and likeable" as opposed to the a$$holes they most often appear to be today.
