SAN FRANCISCO -- In a political and legal challenge to California law, city authorities officiated at the marriage of a lesbian couple Thursday and said they will issue more gay marriage licenses.

The act of civil disobedience was coordinated by Mayor Gavin Newsom and top city officials and was intended to beat a conservative group to the punch.

The group, Campaign for California Families, had planned to go to court on Friday to get an injunction preventing the city from issuing marriage licenses to gay couples.

Wow! The article took my breath away. I'm a Californian, but live in the L.A. area. Had never heard of this story before. I fear the final sentence pretty much says it all about the state of our nation these days. IF so, among other things, I wouldn't expect President Bush to be reelected.

If the general public does not remember its fear in the immediate aftermath of 9/11; if it has not reached the limits of tolerance for sleaze and degradation of social mores; if it cannot connect its own dots between the anthrax attacks and the reason we went into Iraq; if it does not recognize the danger of putting yet another 60's era radical into the White House, then perhaps the nation will deserve what it gets.

I know I'm probably being too gloomy, but there is something worrisome in the air about this election lately. Aside from all the carping from the right, the White House doesn't seem to be in fighting trim for the campaign. One can rarely expect a show of strength from Congressional Republicans, but where's the spunk from the White House? For example, they've allowed themselves to be baited into responding to the insulting and entirely phony National Guard flap, and are dealing with it on the Dems' terms. It's a no-win situation, because there will never be enough "evidence" to quiet the Dems and their media shills now that the White House has dignified their thoroughly manufactured "scandal." I don't know. As I said, maybe I'm just too gloomy right now.

I agree with you about disquiet regarding the election. I'm convinced that this election is GW Bush's, and the Republicans', to lose. Which means that if they don't kick it into gear soon, it could be lost. Most bothersome is that there's about 10% of the electorate that has no real convictions one way or another regarding the candidates, and they sway back and forth, depending on the impressions of the last news cycle, from one camp to the next. Yesterday, they were with Bush; today, they're with Kerry; tomorrow, who knows? This is why, I think, the news media concentrates on such trivial matters -- they know that trivial concerns, images, sound bites, the furrowed brow or a lifted eyebrow from Peter Jennings can sway this group of the squishy middle.

I'm convinced that the majority of people trust GW Bush. They believe him. They give him the benefit of the doubt. They want him to win. But if the White House comes out with a weak response to something, shows a hit of doubt or confusion, allows itself to get sucked into something shallow like the ANG story, the people's confidence in Bush will be shaken.

The nation cannot afford a Kerry in the White House. I fear for the nation if he, or someone of his ilk, wins. The Bush people have everything on their side -- the economy, the progress in Iraq, the steady progress in the war on terror. They should be knocking the Dems back on their heels, but they are not. This is what concerns me. It's still only February, so there is plenty of time to kick this thing in gear. I hope they start soon.

It's not the "nation" that is at fault.
Homos are a very small minority, but they are running roughshod over the American people. WHY?

The majority of the American people don't want amnesties and uncontrolled illegal immegration, but it's being crammed down our throats. WHY?

The judges in America are in violation of the United States Constitution and they're getting away with it. WHY?

These are just three questions of many.

It's too late to change anything with politics because the politicians do NOT listen to the people.

Now, thats a big why and every citizen of this country should be asking it. As long as everybody just sits back and keeps quiet, the pols think we're all stupid. They would not let someone do to them what they are doing to us.

In that brief period between 1/20/01 and 9/11/01, this administration behaved much as it's doing lately. I struggle to find the right way to characterize what I see and sense, but can't articulate it well. It's almost a gauzy attempt at sweetness — aw, shucks, please like me, I'm a good guy. What in my childhood was called "hiding your light under a bushel."

I wonder if they have lost some self-confidence because the WMD have not been found. Whether or not that's the case, I wonder where this man is lately. I miss him:
