Paris - Ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was probably high on drugs when he decided to invade Kuwait in 1990, said a former chief of protocol in a radio interview on Thursday.
Issam Rashid Walid, whose book In Saddam's Shadow is due to be released in French in a few days, also told Europe 1 radio that Saddam had amassed a fortune of about $35bn through various companies he set up, including many in the Brazilian car industry.
"Saddam was heavily into drugs. He began in 1959, with cannabis (dagga), and then when he seized power (in 1979), he used heroin at times.
"He decided to invade Kuwait because he was probably not in his normal state. He was on drugs and drugs made him lose his mind," said Walid.
Iraq invaded Kuwait on August 2 1990, just two years after the end of its eight-year war with Iran.
Ordered to be eaten by a dog
An international coalition led by the United States pushed Iraq out of Kuwait in the 1991 Gulf War. A raft of international sanctions were then adopted to contain Iraq.
Walid, who lives in London, also recounted that Saddam ordered that one of his adversaries be devoured by a Dobermann pinscher.
Saddam became vice-president of Iraq in 1968 before taking over the presidency in 1979. He was deposed during the US-led invasion of Iraq on April 9 last year.
US troops captured Saddam on December 13 as he was hiding in a hole in a farm near his hometown of Tikrit in northern Iraq.
The US administrator in Iraq, Paul Bremer, said last month that Saddam would be tried in a special court being set up by the US-appointed governing council in Iraq.

Liberal journalists orders: "Let's make Saddam a victim. Let's say that he was wacked out on drugs when he decided to invade Kuwait, gas his own people, terrorize his people, etc."

On a serious note, IMHO, the "Forbidden Fruit", that is mentioned in Genesis, which caused Man's fall from God's grace, was actually the heroin poppy. I think the Hebrew scribes purposely mis-described the "poppy", to be a tree that bore fruit, rather than provide the true image of this troublesome plant. In short, I believe the "Serpent" of the Old Testament, was a drug pusher.

Obviously, Saddam needs our support and prayers. Maybe some rehab, and all is forgiven.

So the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil turns out to be the opium poppy. Interesting theory.Yes, I think so. It did not give Adam and Eve the knowledge of "good and evil" as the Bible purposely states, but removes the inhibition of prudent judgement between good and evil. That passage of the Bible, IMO, is the first "Just Say No" advertisement in human history.
I would like to go on record, however, to note that any of the above theory excludes substances such as Guinness and the like. Thank you.
