'Bush and I were lieutenants'
George Bush and I were lieutenants and pilots in the 111th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (FIS), Texas Air National Guard (ANG) from 1970 to 1971. We had the same flight and squadron commanders (Maj. William Harris and Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, both now deceased). While we were not part of the same social circle outside the base, we were in the same fraternity of fighter pilots, and proudly wore the same squadron patch.

The facts are that Nixon ws elected in 1968. President Bush served during the Nixon administration, not the Johnson administration. If you want to appear silly over this issue by "parsing it a little too close, at least parse it correctly."
A more important fact is that millions served during the Vietnam war without ever setting foot in Vietnam. I was one of them, and not a reservist either. In fact, from 1956 until 1968 I was on active duty. To hear the debate today the only way someone could have fulfilled their obligation for military service was to have served in Vietnam. I'm sure DU is full of people who don't know the difference.

Terry McAuliffe and Michael Moore (neither of whom served anywhere) say Lt. Bush abandoned his assignment as a jet fighter pilot without explanation or authorization and was AWOL from the Alabama Air Guard.
That sums it up nicely -- Clinton shills McAuliffe and Michael Moore say it, so it must be a lie.

When the military established the "lottery" my husband's number was 8. He enlisted in the Army before they had a chance to draft him. He served for 2 years from 1970 to 1972. They never called his unit to go to Viet Nam. Instead he spent time in Germany or on guard duty in Kansas.

A couple caveats; Nixon was President during the period covered, not Johnson. William Campenni was posted to Pittsburgh during the period for which the President is alleged to not have shown up for duty.
(see shoot down the highjackers) , unless there are two William /Bill Campennis who flew F102s in the ANG in the early 70s and live somewhere in the DC/Richmond VA area. The letter looks a little like someone trying a little too hard.

Col Campenni never claimed he served with Bush. His first letter to the editor at the Observer was in defense of Bush, explaining how it would not be unusual at all for someone to serve and not be remembered.
