FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AL ANBAR REGION MAKES STEADY IMPROVEMENTS

AL ANBAR, IRAQ - The newly elected Al Anbar Provincial Council in Ar Ramadi met yesterday for the first time since its inception. The delegates were elected using a process of 25 caucuses throughout the province.

Also yesterday, the Al Anbar Young Businessman's Association and Maj. Gen. Charles H. Swannack, Jr signed the Civic Improvement Program (CIP) contract. The Civic Improvement Program will renovate public buildings, clean streets, remove rubble and maintain clean drinking water for the citizens of Al Anbar. The Al Anbar Young Businessman's Association will manage CIP's finances and employees.

The Iraqi police in northern Babil received five 2004 Dodge pick-up trucks yesterday. Each truck contains a portable radio mounted inside. These vehicles will allow the Eskan, Haswah, and Isakandariyah departments to move quickly responding to incidents in their area. Civil affairs personnel with 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division delivered the trucks.

Funds were approved for the renovation of two schools in the Al Tash Refugee Camp. The repairs will positively impact over 900 students in what is one of the poorest regions of Al Anbar. Civil affairs personnel with 1st Brigade paid $44,200 in Commander's Emergency Relief Payment program for the renovation.

Community leaders in Hit opened a new library annex and internet facility yesterday. It will offer 135,000 Hit citizens access to the World Wide Web. Literacy training courses will be offered too. The project was funded with $11,000 in CERP money and $8,000 in community contributions.
