Notable bigot and neo-McCarthyist Daniel Pipes is coming to UC Berkeley, as a guest of Berkeley Hillel and the Israel Action Committee. Pipes will be "discussing the various biases of Middle Eastern Studies Departments nationwide and their impact on students' educations."

Berkeley students and community members have planned an organized presence to counter this racist, to demonstrate that he is not welcome at Berkeley and to show that his hate is unacceptable in our community. Please meet us at 6 pm at Dwinelle Hall -- the event is in room 145, which is on the first floor just inside the main entrance to Dwinelle.
We stress the need for EVERYONE to turn out in opposition to this man, in large numbers. We stress that Pipes has targetted the Berkeley community: by insinuating that the Muslim Student Association and the Center for Middle East Studies are terrorist organizations, by attempting to blacklist and intimidate professors and graduate students at Berkeley, by attacking on the integrity of our university. We point out that his assault reaches well beyond the campus, as he targets our communities, our families, our mosques, our right to engage in political acticity.... by promoting, encouraging, serving as an official spokesperson for a unprecendented new wave of hatred, racism and bigotry in the mainstream media.
This is a man who is a vigorous supporter of religious and ethnic profiling and has made his name by virulently attacking Islam. He has been appointed by Bush to the board of the U.S.Institute of Peace despite having said (or perhaps because he has said), "There can be either an Israel or a Palestine, but not both." This is a man who claims that "all immigrants bring exotic customs and attitudes, but Muslim customs are more troublesome than most." It is a man who uses his influence to convince people that "the presence, and increased stature, and affluence, and enfranchisement of American Muslims...will present true dangers to American Jews." I've read his book! Mr. Pipes was way out front in outing American Muslim organizations as fronts for international terrorist fund raising. Thank you very much Mr. Pipes. You have done this country a great service.
