Opposition to President Bush's No Child Left Behind education law is gaining traction, and Republicans -- even in GOP strongholds such as Utah -- are among those digging in deepest. .....

they may be issuing a warrant for my husband's arrest for the "unexcused" absences

That's what you expect. When the bureaucracy doesn't want to teach they will start picking on the people. Easy to predict. Deal with it.

The real problem is the teachers union and their dem shills. You can't just go out and try to abolish the teachers unions although that would clearly be best 'for the children', But you gotta do it slow. I would bet if you could get Bush aside he would agree.

I don't have any problem with what you're saying, they should be taught just like everyone else after they spend a couple of years in English class. I mean if a kid can't speak English you can't teach him Biology (which is what my wife teaches) when they can't even understand "Please take out your text books."

How do you teach a kid to pass a High School test when they can't even tie their own shoe strings

Well, now, that's a whole 'nuther issue the Democrats are screaming about! Poverty!

'Cause of the Bush economy, too many kids in this country don't have shoes
and those that do don't share them. It's disgraceful.

And when you think of the songs declaring about terrorists, "We'll put a boot up
your a$$," you realize Bush's military is part of this problem. Just how many
boots is Rumsfeld going to ruin rather than giving them to the poorest amongst us?

I'm going back to that Sports Illustrated thread.....

No argument there, but Special Ed students aren't going to understand Algebra or simple Science so how can you put them in the mix and expect the pass/fail ratio's to be right?

I have an appointment with my 5 year olds school principle this thursday, due to his absenses. I have to admit he has missed alot, but all were excused by me sending a note which is required, but now they want Dr. excuse, and he did'nt always go to Dr.He does get sick alot, I think because he was a preemie, gets alot of chest infections.
Now I'm worried I'll get the riot act.

When the Govt. holds the Students & the parents responsible for their own damn pitfalls, well then we'll be on the right track. Blaming the teachers for failing students when the sorry @ss kids don't come to school or if they do their drunk or stoned is assinine. That's like blaming the soldiers for being over in Iraq, they didn't ask to go they were made to go.

How embarassing, you change the title to something more convenient, and still get it incorrect.

As a former teacher, I agree 100% with your sentiments that students and parents must be held
responsible. Home is the key to education, whether education takes place in the home itself
(i.e, homeschooling) or in a public, private, or religious institution.

Unfortunately, many parents don't realize this and/or won't accept the responsibility.

Well, d'uh on my part. LOL!

I would just explain to the principal about him being a preemie and the possible health ramifications, if needed, could your doctor write a letter explaining the same? And explain that as long as he is performing at grade level or above, maybe they should just butt out of your lives, oh wait sorry. Maybe ask him since your son is at or above grade level, if this is really a problem?

Unfortunately, they do not. I know that is stupid, yet very true and unfair to both.
