Lalonde (who served in Frances SOCIALIST PARTY GOVERNMENT from 1988 to 1991 and was the founder of GENERATION ECOLOGIE) and Democratic Presidential hopeful Kerry are kissing cousins (first cousins). Their mothers were sisters.

Former French Environment Minister Brice Lalonde said yesterday that he supports his first cousin Sen. John Kerry in the bid to win the Democratic presidential nomination.
"My cousin's a nice guy, I'd like him to win," Mr. Lalonde told Agence France-Presse. "We saw each other six months ago and even then I was hoping he would be in the running and take the top job."
Mr. Lalonde, who served in France's Socialist Party government from 1988 to 1991 and was the founder of one of France's green parties, Generation Ecologie, on Tuesday revealed that he and Mr. Kerry were related.
"Our two mums were sisters, from a family that during [World War II] spread out and dispersed to the five continents," he told Europe 1 radio.

Kerry's French Connection
"Brice Lalonde, ancien ministre de l'environnement du gouvernement Rocard et ancien leader de Génération Ecologie (GE), espère que son cousin, le démocrate John Kerry, sera élu président des Etats-Unis," reports Agence France-Presse.
Sorry we had to use a foreign-language dispatch there, but we couldn't find the English version anywhere on the publicly accessible Web. Factiva, however, has it: "Former French environment minister Brice Lalonde on Wednesday said he was backing his first cousin US Senator John Kerry in his bid to take the Democratic presidential nomination."
That's right, it turns out he doesn't just look French. Apparently the haughty Massachusetts Democrat, who by the way served in Vietnam, actually has blood ties to America's most annoying erstwhile ally.
A French blogress who identifies herself only as Carine translates a report from French TV station TF1:
Lalonde: He [Kerry] knows the world, you know, and contrary to many other Americans, he has traveled a lot. Hence he has European connections. He is a big supporter of the environment.

Somewhat off topic, and I may have missed entire threads about this, but has much been written about the fact that Kerry's grandfather was not Irish, but changed his name from Kohn to Kerry when he entered the country?
