RAPID CITY, S.D. - Republican John Thune has received the backing of American Indian activist Russell Means as Thune challenges Democratic Sen. Tom Daschle in this year's election.

"I'm going to work with Sen. Thune's staff and the state Republican Party, and that will open doors to work with the National Republican Party to completely change Indian policy in America," Means said.

SD:

Daschle leads former Rep. John Thune 50%to 44%.
That compares with a 48-46 margin three months ago.

"One of four Republicans would not support John Thune in a Senate race.
Twenty percent of the Republicans feel Tom Daschle should be re-elected.

This is good news for Indians and Republicans. Indians need to get off of the Democrat dole and look for ways to lift themselves up. They need help that doesn't make them dependent and that isn't the Democrat way.

MEANS is the IDIOT who destroyed 100+ jobs at a new Fairchild plant due to open in a week or so 30 years or so ago on the Navajo reservation at Shiprock.

I forget the issues he was pontificating about. But I think some Navajos had even been trained already and the plant was do to open in a week or 3.

But Means kept agitating so aggressively for more and more stupid stuff to build up his political clout . . . that Fairchild said

ENOUGH OF THIS [pile of sheep dung] and closed the building and walked off.

Idiot commie Means. Still mouthing off, evidently.

Steve Hildebrand, Daschle's campaign manager, said Daschle was ready to discuss issues important to Indian people...

How long has Daschle been Senator? And only NOW he is ready to discuss issues important to Indian people?

Means self confessed killer of FBI agents working for the pubbies

{sigh} You're gonna need a source for that. Means was convicted of a felony 30 years ago and pardoned in 2002 after many years of pursuing causes in a legal, responsible manner.

Monsieur Jean "Bring It On" Kerry

Measure Number: H.R. 3396 (Defense of Marriage Act) Kerry (D-MA), Nay

SC Dem Debate 01/29/04

Kerry opposed the death penalty until 2002 , voted against military action in the 1991 Persian Gulf war, and voted to freeze defense spending.

Bank records would later show that Kerry's Chinese campaign cash came from $300,000 in overseas wire transfers sent to Chung on orders from the chief of Chinese military intelligence, Newsweek reports.

I think he was convicted of something not long thereafter.

I just read it in the local FARMINGTON DAILY TIMES way back then.

Might have been an Arizona paper when I was at school but I think it was when I was home.

Would probably be between 1966 and 1969 as best as I can recall.

I still consider him a commie idiot. Perhaps he's reformed to some degree but I seriously doubt it.

I *THINK* there was another Native American agitator working with him but I don't recall his name.

Russell Means sure sounds like the one I'm recalling from way back then but I wouldn't want to base anything major on having the name right.

Russell Means sure sounds like the one I'm recalling from way back then

Means, a co-founder of the American Indian Movement, gained national attention when AIM members and supporters took over the village of Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge reservation in 1973.

Means was convicted of a felony, riot to obstruct justice, stemming from an April 30, 1974, clash between police and American Indian Movement supporters in Sioux Falls.

"I refused to stand up for Judge Joe Bottum. There is no crime for not standing up for a judge, but it is a polite show of respect. So he sent in the riot police to deal with us, and we beat up the riot police,'' Means said. ``I did my time, one year, three days, 221/2 hours in the Sioux Falls penitentiary.''

From everything I've read, he's been law-abiding for the past 30 years.

From everything I've read, he's been law-abiding for the past 30 years.

Please excuse me for rolling on the floor laughing before replying. Russell Means has been arrested for domestic abuse on three reservations, and interestingly enough, those arrests have sparked constitutional fights. He is, alas, the Indian Jessie Jackson. I know many up at Pine Ridge who groan every time he rolls into town and are usually very happy when he wanders away to do something else.

I've met him dozens of times, and every time I spend a good hour in the shower scrubbing myself clean.

That being said, like a broken calendar watch, even Russell can be right once a year.

I, among many others, have been working tirelessly to set up combinations between American Indians and the Republican party. Daschle's aid won't say it, but Means' joining the opposition is a horrible blow. It will cost the Senator likely a quarter million in contributions from other tribes (who incidentally fear Means and don't want to get on his bad side.. Again, mostly the Jesse effect.)

All in all, I think this is a positive development.

Not a murderer, no. Convicted, later pardoned, for rioting 30 years ago or so...

While I've never thought of A.I.M as a group that represents my interests, I gotta give Means some credit here - I hope his eye-opening continues...
