DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- When you boil it all down, the Budweiser Shootout is nothing but a glorified practice among 19 drivers to see who has the best Daytona 500 backup car.
So why is it always so intense?
Why do 22 drivers -- pole winner from 2003 and previous Shootout winners -- go after it so hard?
Well, it's simple. It's a race. There's money on the line. Did we mention it was a race?
"It's like a bar fight, but the car takes the beating," defending Budweiser Shootout winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.

Just a bit of history; the other 2 times DJ won the Shootout, he also won the 500.

If Norm doesn't have anything set for qualifying, I'll see if I can get something together.

As much as a Stewart fan as I am (the rest of my family are Dale Jr. fans) a come from nowhere finish is ALWAYS the best.

All I want to know, did they slow the cars down again? I surely don't want to endanger any of those good 'ol southern boys good looks. BTW, 20 years ago they posted faster times on the super speedways. Cool!
To: tubebender
no love lost for Skinner, but i didn't see him pushing it looked like rusty backed off as the lane closed out IMO rewatch the tape

*giggle* You know I was glued to a TV set watching the race! Fortunately, our Saturday-night-out eatery is a sports bar and they have three huge screens....all tuned in to TNT tonight.
It was nice to see DJ have a win....and what a wild way to get it. Jr. AAAAAALL over his rear bumper the last several laps. I just knew they were both gonna end up in the wall.
Aaaaaah, the sounds of Spring are finally in the air.....NASCAR season has begun!! WOOOHOOOOO!!

They ended up putting Skinner at the tail end of Lap 70 in 15th; he took the checkered in 5th after he passed Flash below the yellow line (he backed off before he passed Rusty, but the only problem was that he was 3-wide).
As far as better than normal, he ALMOST caused a yellow when he slid up into Jimmie Johnson, who got shoved into McMurray just before Mayfield and Blaney brought it out.

They're actually running just a tick faster down the straights (shaved the spoiler some), but a bit slower in the turns (the sidewalls on the tires flex a bit more, and the same shaved spoiler). I wonder just how fast they'd go if they still had the mid-80's body rules (no plates/roof rails/a few other things), but the basic shape of today's cars.

I have a qualifying thread ready to go; just need to hit "post". If I don't hear from anyone before I get back from church about 10:40 Central (20 minutes before qualifying starts), I'll send it up over in Chat (methinks it would be pushing it to throw it on the News side considering we're setting just the front row for the 500, the order for the Twin 125s, and the times used for positions 31-38 in the 500 :-)

I don't have exclusivity to posting this stuff, yaknow, besides, it'll keep yuz off the cheese and Janet Jackson threads.. :-} LOLOL
Just Do IT!! My plans are up in the air, I may be there too, not sure yet. I'm in sensitive negotiations with wifey for a reprieve.
Chat will do just fine for all the stuff except the LIVE race threads. click off on sports and maybe culture and military and BUMP the Canteen thread with the link too.
I like being an observer,, I made sure and watched the race alot more yesterday and let all the folks bang on the thread. IT worked out really well, I think. You guys do a great job.
I have been reluctant to share the pIng list with ChefKeith and you, but may cough it up.. just so we watch and don't overping folks, altho we actually lost very few off the list during the off-season, and added a couple so we have about 100 folks on it.
