Propriety Malfunction
ComPost ^ | Thursday, February 5, 2004 | Marjorie Williams

Let me get this straight. The federal government and a huge posse of editorial writers have got their knickers in a twist because Super Bowl watchers -- children, even! -- were exposed for a few seconds to the corrupting sight of Janet Jackson's right breast.

...

So forgive me if I am nothing but sourly amused at the outrage over Janet Jackson's breast. It serves the hypocrites at all the official fonts of indignation right that they, and we, are nothing but pawns in the marketing of her new CD. Wake me when it's over.

I read this op-ed piece this morning. It probably will not interest the majority of FR. Below is a letter I sent to the editor -

After reading the op-ed by Marjorie Williams (Propriety Malfunction), I am not surprised why we – meaning the vast majority of the public that live outside confines of metropolitan cities – witness a daily coarsening of public decency and the devaluation of morals.

First, Ms. Williams believes the outrage is about the quick viewing of a breast on a national televised sporting event, showing how out-of-touch she is with mainstream America. Nearly everything about this Super Bowl was disgraceful. The majority of the commercials appealed to grammar school intellects while the half time show – with simulated acts of sex, crotch grabbing, objectionable lyrics, pseudo strippers, and the climax of either a sexual assault or a grandstand play by two over-the-hill performers, attacked the sensibilities of the majority of the viewing public not only in America, but around the world. What they must think of the United States in other nations.

Second, Ms. Williams wants us to wake her when the crying is over. That is not the way it is suppose to work. If you want something done, you have to get involved and get others involved. You do not like the trash passing as movies? You do not like the violence of video games? You do not like the garbage on your television screen? You do not like the porn promoted on your personal computer? Not only write to the makers of this trash voicing your objections but also use your column to list their addresses and get your readers involved. You, Ms. Williams, are the good person doing nothing and letting evil flourish.

There is a daily attack on the morals of our citizens. Waiting for it to be over while you ignore the problem, only allows it to continue.

I - as well as my wife and as many friends and family I can get to do so - plan to write to CBS, MTV, Viacom, the NFL, and associated sponsers to voice our displeasure.

Don't sweat it - next time I see her I'll be sure to tear her blouse off. "Whats the big deal" will be my defense. LOL.

I'm no prude and I would not advocate covering the Venus de Milo's breasts even if they were shown on prime time TV. However, I was as disgusted as anyone with the display by Ms. Jackson last Sunday.

What I think has people upset is the totally raunchy context of the entire half time show. MTV has become a living scene from a Hieronymus Bosch painting and will go to extreme lengths to degrade, shock and disgust its viewers in the name of "entertainment". MTV has long been devoid of music as it parades talentless hacks competing in "music" videos to outdo each other in obscenity, sleaze and disgusting behavior. Could anyone seriously believe that the likes of "50 cent" and Brittany are true musical talents?

I think it is significant that more people fulminated about seeing part of JJ's bosom (covered with a metallic valkyrie-type decoration) for two seconds than they did about Kid Rock doing his entire performance wearing a mutilated US flag.

Anyway, we now a new theme song for the Superbowl games: Thanks For The Mammary.
