The Bush administration's new budget includes a $1.2 billion, 30-year loan to renovate the aging United Nations headquarters and build a new annex, although U.N. officials expressed disappointment that Washington will charge interest on the loan.

The loan was part of a $31.5 billion foreign-operations budget request released Monday that also includes major new funding for the fight against AIDS and a revamped U.S. foreign-aid program targeting poor countries that implement political and social reforms.

Good Lord, what is it in the water in DC that sucks the common sense out of men?

Other people's money.

Then we can get Bush elected in 2004, and then we'll get some conservatism, by gum.

But we need to get a filibuster-proof majority of 60 Republican senators, first. Then they will finally be able to enact conservative legislation.

True. Spines are not spontaniously generated until this number is reached.

You could look it up once my research proposal grant is funded.

Oh, George! George!

Trust me. If I've learned one thing from all this, it ain't the thinking that does it.

It's all in the wrist.

It's a loan, to be paid back with interest

The US is one of the main countries who fund the UN. The UN gets its money from member states. So in effect, we will be paying some of the money back to ourselves.

I'll top that one. It would utterly destroy the reputation of the UN if we fully financed it.

I'm from Utah.

The armed men who will come and take my payment to the UN are in their happy place.

The men and women who wrote the anti-UN resolution are Utah Republicans. I helped elect them. I stand behind them.

I'm a conservative. Let the chips fall. I hold their feet to the fire. They are my duly elected representatives who support my view.

Look at the map.

This is red Bush country.

Every single county.

Maybe no one in DC hears my voice, but I'm doing what I can here at home. I'm proud of these Utah folks... and they are my folks.

I'm doing what I think is appropriate and yet, possibly, if I speak my mind (and vote accordingly) on this subject, I'll be banished from this forum, which I have grown an attachment to. I'm a dollar-a-day donor, and volunteer to (and will continue to) promote this site without hesitation, as long as my support is accepted.

I have a good many friends of all political persuasions here. I hope open discourse will remain the standard. I don't expect the powers of the east to understand our water struggles, our forest fires, our illegals, our western mindsets... I hope to express our western values and opinions freely here. I haven't changed.

Roger, you left out an important word.

I have a good many American friends of all American political persuasions here. I hope open discourse will remain the American standard. I don't expect the powers of the east to understand our water struggles, our forest fires, our illegals, our western American mindsets... I hope to express our western American values and opinions freely here. I haven't changed.
