Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee today said the growth-oriented policies enunciated in the Interim Budget would usher in a second Green revolution and propel India towards the developed nation status by 2020. He said food and national security were of prime importance and appealed to the government staff to save for the future. Reacting to the Interim Budget, Mr Vajpayee said it clearly revealed that the country was on a high growth path with a buoyant economy and the liberalisation process on course.

Dubbing it a holistic exercise, he said there was something for all sections of society, including farmers and workers.

The Prime Minister pointed out that the government’s main objective was to ensure food security and national security. In this context, the policies announced would prove beneficial.

Dwelling on the food-for-work programme and its efficacy in addressing drought and unemployment problems, he said: “Rs 2 per kg of wheat and Rs 3 per kg of rice is a big boon for the poor and the unemployed.” He said the government had asked all state governments to speed up the implementation of the programme and help the country face any crisis. Referring to the decision to merge 50% of dearness allowance with basic pay, he said, “Employees will no doubt welcome the move. But I appeal to them not to expend all the benefits they receive. They should save for the future.”

Industrialized? Perhaps... But they will still be dirt poor if they don't eliminate all the bureaucratic red tape that is strangling their economy and free-up their trade with other nations.
