Sometimes we get some over-reaction to these things at other locations after something is found earlier. Remember the last time when they closed some building because of a spilled soda or something. Let's hope this is not another "real" case.

There have been many, many threads on this cluster of attacks. Can somebody give an overview: number of incidents, locations, real toxic agent or "suspicious", timing?

If all of these are real this is a truly serious, coordinated (but so-far impotent) attack.

Worrysome that they would do this at a hospital. This would be a great way to increase casualties in a real attack. Blow up a place, then make sure that no one can get to the hospital for treatment.

more on CT, i think this is homegrown leftist terror.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An envelope containing a suspicious powder found in a Connecticut post office overnight was addressed to the Republican National Committee (news - web sites) and is being tested to see if it is the deadly poison ricin, officials said on Tuesday.

The letter was found hours after a powder which initially tested positive for ricin was found in a U.S. Senate mailroom. Officials in Connecticut said field tests of the powder were inconclusive but all mail associated with the envelope was isolated until laboratory tests were completed later on Tuesday.

"We are performing a battery of tests for biological and chemical agents including testing for the presence of ricin," Connecticut health department spokesman Michael Purcaro said.

The envelope leaking grayish, sandy granules was found in Wallingford, Connecticut in one of the same mail sorting facilities where anthrax bacteria spores were found in the 2001 anthrax attacks that killed five people and also involved U.S. Senate offices.

The mail clerk who made the discovery was wearing gloves when he handled the envelope and he was not injured, said U.S. assistant postal inspector in charge Kevin McDonough, whose area includes Wallingford, the New England region's major mail sorting center.

He said the employee was decontaminated as a precaution.

No illnesses have been reported in either the Connecticut or U.S. Senate incident. The discovery did disrupt business in the U.S. Capitol complex on Tuesday.

A 94-year-old Connecticut woman was one of five people who died after inhaling anthrax that was spread in mail in the months immediately after the Sept. 11, 2001, hijacked plane attacks on the United States. No one has been identified as responsible for the incidents.

Was there a woman changing a baby's diaper there by any chance?

The usual SOE (sequence of events) in these cases is to find one or two sights that may be contaminated and then every stuffed toy that is dropped by a toddler or sprinkle of powdered cleanser becomes "suspicious".

I just came from my acupuncturist's office, where a little pile of white powder of unknown origin was spotted on the carpet just inside the front door. The receptionist swept it up. Is she the only person left in this country who responds to misplaced white powder by sweeping it up?
