DeWeese: Position on Illegal Immigration Policy is a "Matter of Values"

What Part Of "Illegal" Don’t Americans Understand?

January 28, 2004

By Tom DeWeese

Which side one takes in the great debate over illegal immigration policy is a matter of values.

Do you treasure a strong, independent United States of America as the beacon of freedom in the world? Are you proud to live in a nation where personal liberty and free choice led to the creation of the highest standard of living and the best medical care in history? Do you believe in the free enterprise system? Do you believe in the rule of law, based on the Constitution, as the only way to protect your natural rights? Do you believe that the United States is unique among any other nation or system on earth?

If you hold these ideals as truth, then there is only one solution to illegal immigration. It must be stopped. None of the factors that distinguish the United States from all others can be preserved if this nation erases its borders and ignores its founding principles, primary among which is the rule of law.

I've picked Connecticut Broadleaf Tobacco with Puerto Ricans and I've pumped gas and scrubbed the toilets of the gas stations I worked................

Ronald Reagan gave an amnesty in 1986. Supposedly THIS was supposed to solve the problem once and for all. Now we have the current amnesty program.

President Bush, YOU have it backwards. We have already had an amnesty, so I'm willing to make a concession: Close the Borders FIRST; Erect a wall Second.........THEN, and only then, will I even consider your current request.

Very true. I remember when I heard Willie Brown (?) mayor of SF saying that he would ignore the law and make SF a refuge for illegals. I wondered how he could break the law openly and not be relieved of office...

The 1986 amnesty wasn't the only time the Federal government made us assurances or promises it would do something about illegal immigration. In 1993, we were told the NAFTA treaty would develop the Mexican economy, modernizing it, and providing jobs for all the Mexicans would otherwise try to enter the US illegally for work. Instead, it made the narco-terrorist, upper-class Herrenvolk of Mexico richer with maquiladora and agribusiness deals, and increased drug traffic from Mexico through increased cross-border transport. And the volume of illegals kept going up.

In November 1994, in response to Prop. 187, the re-election of the otherwise unpopular Republican governor Pete Wilson on an explicit anti-illegal alien platform, and the loss of the California Legislature to the Republicans, I remember Clintigula unctuously promising increased border controls to stem the flow of illegals. The flow was merely diverted from the San Ysidro checkpoints further east into the desert. And the flow of illegals continued to increase.

Our immigration policy isn't made in Washington DC by Americans---it's made in Mexico City by Mexicans. I don't want to ruled from Mexico City---I thought the US won that war with Mexico 150 years ago.

Thanks for pinging me to this great commentary. And yes, I agree that our President has it all backwards on this issue, at his own peril. Hopefully sanity will ultimately prevail.

I met him a few years ago and was very impressed with his knowledge and his concern about the direction of our government. He is an excellent speaker.

Well sure... sort of a no-brainer. And illegal immigration is a threat to all these principles when the laws aren't enforced.

I agree, but those that actively support the welfare state and those that refuse to enforce the existing laws don't see it that way.

Being an employer who hires Americans, pay all of my state and federal payroll taxes while many employers in my area hire nothing but illegals, EVADE numerous taxes while outrightly breaking federal law....I can't begin to tell how much I loathe these idiots....almost as much as the politicians that have made it all possible. Essentially, we now have a country that runs on some sort of double standard for employers....we used to be a constitutional republic, now we're turning into nothing more than banana republic.

I said on a post some days back--about the only thing that might help would be to raise taxes on the lowest income group. At least they could start to pay for some of their own social services.

You realize that taxes have been lowered so much for the lowest income level that they've essentially been given even more motive to migrate? They pay next to no taxes.

Hey, raise 'em.

If I’m not mistaken some if not all illegal immigrants are eligible to collect the earned income tax credit at the end of the year. They’ve got quite the racket going at our expense.

I felt the same way about Bill Clinton. The fact that he was impeached shows that there is some accountability in the system, but the fact that he was not impeached for chinagate and that he was not removed for perjury shows that the system needs more restoration and concerned citizens should not slacken in our vigilance.

Speaking of Chinagate, Kerry accepted ten grand in donations from the Chinese military at about the same time that Clinton was selling out our missile secrets.

Rotten piece of trash. I hope this comes to light during his campaign. It should be illegal for politicians to accept foreign money, but no, we get CFR instead, thanks Bush.
