they showed the Mexican trucks going through a check point where their emissions were tested, before they crossed into the US. ...
Hmmm, I don't know about where you live but here in California when we get an emmissions (smog) check it takes expensive equipment and a considerable amount of time...not simply "go through a check point". But did they bother to check what was actually IN the trucks while they were at it?...I didn't think so.

But did they bother to check what was actually IN the trucks while they were at it? So, it isn't the emmissions that you quibble with, but the load inside the trucks?
The FOX reporter didn't say...

I've done nothing but wonder for the past few weeks since that bitter "coalition of the willing lawbreakers" pill he handed me to swallow.
If there was a conservative challenger to W, what a rhetorical banquet!
W's favorite word in speeches is "willing"--willing illegal aliens and the willing slavedrivers who want them. Now we have willing Mexican drivers in Mexican eighteen-wheelers, all ready to mow you down on I-85.
I already know people hit by unlicensed, uninsured illegals. How much more fun with an eighteen-wheeler!
And the American truck-driver, the small entrepeneur who parks his rig outside his double-wide in the hills--he can now see his income driven down.
But his taxes will still go to send the children of the illegals to school--and his health insurance premiums skyrocket for having to cover illegals...
And his kid is the one fighting in Iraq...
Tell me not to be furious.

Haven't seen them [Mexico] do a damn thing for the US - NOT ONE!!!Gee whiz, all you need to do is open your eyes. Mexico has donated at least 4,000,000 of its hardest working people. Rumor has it that they are the only thing that keeps America's economy plugging along. At least give them credit for that.

Going for the jugular of the entire spectrum of blue collar workers is bad enough.
Cutting the jugular of the American Trucking Industry isn't going to be as easy as Dubya thinks.
Clinton and Gore lost Arkansas and Tennessee in 2000 for turning their backs on their "core" voter support.
Bush keeps up with this kind of political suicide, he's liable to match Clinton and Gore in 2004 and not even carry his home state of Texas.
Sound incredible? It is. So is offering up the entire trucking industry for the Hispanic vote.

"Yea diesel emissions, that could be "the major problem" with trucks coming freely, un-checked across the border."
Family in South Texas, I judged border trucks myself. Diesel smoke is least of anyone's worries! The truck's mechanicals and environmental cleanliness (as in what kind of crap lives inside these old, craggy storehouses on wheels) are of a much greater concern.
I concur with other Freepers, Fox must have something on Bush to have him by the short-hairs and DICTATE POLICY to the US.

What we need are a few enraged unions members. Do blacks even have a clue what this does to their prospects and families?
Have we heard from the Teamsters, yet?

Yeah, he just keeps shooting himself in the foot. Wonder how long before he stops trying to grab the gun, so to speak.

Gypsy has a point. Our vehicles are required to meet emission levels, in some states, in order to be able to use them. These vehicles are getting a pass, that is not right.
I also read somewhere sometime back that the Mexican trucks would not pass safety inspections here in the states, if that is the case then that is another thing that is not right.

"Does this weaken NAFTA?"
How would that happen, it is helping Mexican workers. It would weaken NAFTA if we kept it as is.

Nope! Never have driven in Mexico. Although, we did get into an accident once with some people who were speeding through the intersection as we were making a left hand turn (it was "techically" our fault because of the left hand turn. we got one cite. they got about seven.) The woman had a license and the man (who was driving) tried to stay away from authorities, so we wondered if he was even supposed to be here. The couple lied about who was driving, then had the nerve to try to sue our insurance company. Once we told our insurance company who had really been driving, they countersued the couple and we never heard of the case again. Didn't even show up as a claim on our insurance.

Maybe someone should let Karl Malone know. I realize he is a big NBA athlete and making lots of money doing it, but he was/is(?) a trucker and would not like this. He could do some serious damage on the minority and trucker fronts.

If they don't have a third brakelight and seatbelts, they shouldn't be allowed NEAR our borders. Gotta satisfy Brakelight Giddy.

Mexicans are special, and our friends...we wouldn't want to trouble them.

the situation in Mexico is that most of the trucks from pickups to semis are seriously overloaded. I travel between Mexico City and Queretaro every month. I have seen some horrendous accidents mostly due to overloaded trucks losing control.

Just another thing to add to the list of affronts to his conservative base.
