My money says they would release him in order to keep dialogue going and to distance themselves from the homicide bomber.
American Catholics surely are. There are some exceptions but by and large European and Middle East Catholics are not friends of Israel. Those Catholic leaders buy into Muslim lies and so do their congregations. There are some exceptions but Euro-Catholics are not at all understanding of Israel, that they are up against Muhammad inspired barbarians.
Maronite Catholics (Lebanon) can be an exception in the Middle East. Israel defended them for years and they fought Arafat too, to get his mafia evicted from Lebanon.
Don't worry. There are PLENTY of Protestant idiots as well. The Bible said that the church would be ravaged by wolves in sheep's clothing and this guy and others like him -- both Catholic and Protestant -- just bear out this prophecy.

Today the jewish people are getting a taste of their own medicine.
Sharon should pick one terrorist group, any one, and utterly destroy it - kill its leaders any way possible (preferably when meeting fellow terrorists), take NO PRISONERS, bulldoze their houses, seize their assets (and use the proceeds to aid victims of terror), deport their ENTIRE EXTENDED FAMILY - in short, utterly destroy them and their infrastructure. This will not only stop any further terror from that terror group, but it will put the others on notice that Israel is REALLY F'ING SERIOUS this time. Talk doesn't work, prisoner exchanges don't work, truces and temporary cease fires don't work, half-measures don't work, economic incentives don't work and "autonomy" hasn't worked - the only thing that will work is victory, overwhelming, undisputed, salt the earth victory. After all of the fruitless efforts for peace over the course of 5 1/2 decades, Israel's government should have figured this out. It has the OBLIGATION to its citizens to destroy terror, root and branch - and the failure to do so will signify a moral failure the likes of which hasn't been seen since Munich in 1938.
Oh, and that smelly, ugly fudge-packer in Ramallah has got to go - expell him, and kill everyone around him. The time for talking is long since past - it is now time for action, EFFECTIVE action.
This needs to be repeated. Of course, that would require that PM Sharon actually grow a pair (as opposed to General Arik Sharon, who wouldn't have hesitated for one second to do the right thing, but whose body was tragically taken over by a spineless alien creature at some indeterminate time in the past).

A little off topic, but I heard a totally new thought about the Israeli situation there this week. The Pallies often complain that a lot of land there "doesn't belong to the Jews". It is true that the Greek Orthodox Church holds title to some very large and/or significant properties. The Knesset and the Israel Museum supposedly rest on land that is under long-tem lease from the GOC. These leases are supposedly (a friend I trust told me this, I have no other source) due in about 10 years or so aand the Palies are licking their chops at what it portends.......
BUT, the Greek Orthodox Church in Israel, for long made up of Arabs, is increasingly dominated by RUSSIANS who came in during the immigrant flood from the old USSR, and THEY want the land to go to the gov't of Israel. Kind of funny how the "law of unintended consequences" or whatever it is, works out!
The Jews bless the nations even went they're not trying to, and in this case, the Russians return the blessing, even when they're not trying to. There's some theological principles buried in there somewhere.
