Help would be welcome: (Protecting the Border - Maybe?)
Sierra Vista Herald, Sierra Vista Arizona ^ | 1/28/04

On Friday, Mario Villarreal, a spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection, announced that the agency plans a major operation to add manpower and equipment to the busiest parts of the Arizona-Mexico border.

While the announcement didn't say where the equipment would go, we assume that Cochise County would be at the top of that list. The county has continually been the state's and nation's hotspot for illegal immigration. And the numbers since last October show that this year border apprehensions have increased, some in part to the agency's increased operations in this area. October is when the new federal budget year began.

The agency will announce the specific numbers later, possibly as soon as sometime this week.

We encourage the agency to boost its staffing in the county. It is important that illegal immigrants trying to cross here know they won't have an easy road to travel.

A border that is being enforced hopefully will deter some who may want to illegally enter our nation. We also believe that a secure border goes a long way to making our nation safer.

The people in Cochise County are tired of being overrun by illegal immigrants. And we're tired of feeling as if we're being ignored by our federal government.

Worst yet, we know that the Border Patrol, which is under the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection, is understaffed for the length of border they have in Cochise County.

The delivery of more manpower and equipment would start to give the agents here the backup they need. It also may start to create hope for Cochise County residents that federal officials will work to enforce the border.

Securing the border is just part of the solution to illegal immigration problems we now face.

Hmm... This is in addition to creating a 14 mile fence on the California/Mexico border.

They just might want to beef up Yuma, Az. Someone on BP got waxed recently. They could probably use heavily armed backup.

Yep over the mountain in the west range area near Blacktail Canyon and get caught. Some try the east range but with all the A-10, C130 traffic they usually get spotted and picked up. Best bet for them is through Hippie-ville Bisbee to the San=Pedro River (really an intermittent seasonal stream)the BP calls the San-Pedro Freeway or come over the mountains through the Ramsey Canyon area to be picked up by Coyotes.

Work up a good estimate on the number of illegals that came in 2003 and subtrack that number for the 2004 legal immigration quota across the board. The will help to maintain the bottom line total on immigration.
