New 9/11 audio is being released today played at the 9/11 Commission hearing. Flight attendant Betty Ong calling the American Airlines reservation desk regarding the hijackers taking over American Airlines Flight 11 Boeing 767, before it struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

Two hijackers nearly killed you? Were you supposed to be on one of those planes that morning?

No, I was on the street, a very few short blocks from the WTC. Had tiny glass shards come down on me from secondary explosions in the north tower.

In a weird confluence of events, on the night of 9/10/01, one of my best friends from college and her then-fiance nearly had a car crash (in the parking lot of a convenience store in Maine) with 2 of the hijackers who nearly killed me the next morning.

9/11 was the biggest PR coup in history. It helped islam's cause. Most of the top guys were never found. And everyone's already forgotten about it basically.

Much easier to take the time to look compared with the time to share something so moving and personal. I have a friend from college who was working in the WTC and I still remember the helplessness of watching on TV from Ohio when the towers came down. By the grace of God he was still on his way to work when the attack happened, but I can't even imagine the feelings I went through multiplied by concern for hundreds of friend and family.

OMG, how horrible. You, indeed are one of the lucky ones.
I can't even imagine being there on the street and watching this terrible event happen. It was bad enough watching it unfold on tv. I, still to this day feel traumatized by this horrible day in history. I think it changed us all. And, God bless all the lost, innocent souls and our soilders who make the ultimate sacrifices each and every day to avenge this evil. The evil ones will pay one day, no matter how long it takes.

Actually, I forgot about that until I read this thread. I remember when I called her at work (after getting a frantic email from her, because she couldn't reach me) and just feeling a chill when she told me.

Yes, it was the grace of G-d that kept him safe. In a weird twist, I didn't have to be at my job until 10 a.m., so at that time of the morning, I was usually still home. I was only out there because I'd overestimated how much time I'd need to vote in the primary for mayor. For months, that haunted me, that of all the days that I was outside that early, it had to be *that* day.

Lucky because I survived with the most minor of injuries, if you can call them that -- a sprained ankle, smoke inhalation, etc. -- but still emotionally traumatized.
