MOST TERRIFYING GUN IN THE WORLD SEIZED
The Daily Mirror (UK) ^ | Jan 26 2004 | Gary Jones

THE first fully automatic handgun to surface in the UK - capable of firing 1,100 rounds a minute - has been seized in a police raid.

It is a Glock 18, banned from sale in the US and described as a "monster of a weapon" that fires bullets with the intensity of a high- pressure water hose.

The ultra-light, Austrian-made gun was discovered in a swoop on the home of a suspected Yardie gangster. Scotland Yard has issued a nationwide alert as they try to find the owner and establish how the weapon got into Britain.

A Met firearms expert said: "It's extremely worrying that such a weapon is here. I can't stress enough just how dangerous this gun is.

"If it was fired on the streets of London by someone unused to its immense firing capability, there could be a massacre.

"Why even a criminal would want to own such a gun is beyond me. It would probably bethe ultimate in gun status-symbols." The Yard has warned front-line officers about the discovery, which followed a a raid on a residential address in Norwood, South East London.

A force internal report said: "This is the first weapon of its kind to be seized in the UK. It is not issued to any agencies in the UK and is believed to have been imported from the US."

The report said the Glock can fire "armour-piercing ammunition". It has a compensation device to keep it straight during firing.

SAS officers use the gun in combat with a 19-round magazine. Israeli security forces and Germany's GSG-9 anti-terror unit also carry it.

British armed police use the semi-automatic Glock 17, also a favourite with criminals.

America banned its import in 1986. US arms expert Walt Rauch said: "Shooting the G18 full-auto is just like turning on a high-pressure hose,"

Det Insp Martin Ward said: "This is something of a monster of a weapon. We are appealing for anyone to come forward in the strictest confidence with information."

I'll be thinking of the business my brother is building, and my nephew and niece.

I'm not terrofoed. The gun is useless for anything but highly specialized purposes.

1,100 rounds a minute is roughly 18 rounds a second. Since the average pistol magazine hold 10-15 rounds, that means anyone shooting this ridiculous piece of hardware would empty the mag before he could release the trigger. We won't even talk about the slim chances of actually HITTING anything, which is hard enough at that cyclic rate even using a submachine gun with a buttstock and a two-hand grip.

This is a piece of ordnance looking for a purpose, namely in the hands of juvenile gangster wannabes. But now anyone who owns a Glock will be tarred as a nutcase fanatic whose weapons shoot "with the intensity of a high-pressure hose."

(Note to the writer: if you're going to try to work a pejorative metaphor, you might want to reconsider that one. Any firearm worthy of the name will shoot projectiles much, much faster than a water hose. If it's hosin' you're wantin', you might want to consider a Super Soaker.)

It really needs a shoulder stock to be controllable, in the manner of a sub-gun.

At least the author didn't mention that it's partially made of plastic - in other words "invisible to metal detectors". Or has that myth finally gone the way of the dodo?

Personally, I think that an M2 mounted on top of a jeep is pretty terrifying, expecially if you're not on the best of terms with the owner...

WTF????

It's illegal in the US to have one. Why would it come from here to England instead on US streets?

Hmmmm

Clearly, what they need in the U.K. is more gun control laws. And since they think this one came from the U.S., and the gun is already illegal here, we need more and better gun control laws here, too. After all, if criminals are getting these things even though they are illegal in both countries, then our laws just aren't good enough. We need better laws, right?

Just an observation: It seems that no matter what kind of laws we have against theft, there are always some people who insist on stealing. The author of the article might ask in disbelief, "Why do bad people insist on being bad?" Personally, I don't see why someone that clueless about human nature is paid to write articles.

As far as the writer of the article is concerned, this will be the end of all civilzation:

This article is a load of bull on so many levels. The G-18 is a very specialized weapon. It is used for the most part by special bodyguard teams who need a lot of firepower in a very small package to protect dignitaries. I think for instance U.S. Marshals that protect some judges have been known to use them.

The 18 is VERY hard to control. Most operators have practiced firing them in 2 and 3 round bursts. Any more than that, you are just spraying bullets.

There is a 33 round glock magazine designed specifically for that gun, but it also works in all other 9MM Glock models. With the G-18, you might get all of two seconds worth of full auto burst before the slide locks back and you have an empty gun. That isn't even efficient for a thug. Use the regular 17 round magazine, and all you have done is waste a lot of ammo in the blink of an eye.

I seriously doubt the Special Air Service troopers carry the Glock 18. Until a couple of years ago they were known to pack Browning 9mm autos. Now, I think they have transitioned to the Sig Sauer P-226, like the Navy Seals have. It is quite possible that some units carry the Glock 17, like so many police departments do, however, there would really be NO REASON to do it when they have MP-5s and a host of other military long arms.

FINALLY, any 9mm pistol can fire armor piercing ammo, if one can find it. It is not just limited to the full auto glockola.

What a bunch of Barbra Streisand this is.

When we were teenagers I helped a friend work on a Luger to reduce trigger pull. We worked all of the moving parts over with fine sharpening stones and accidentily ended up with a full auto Luger. I was standing behind him when he fired the first time. He had only five rounds in the clip and all of them emptied so fast he didn't realize it until he noticed that the action was locked open. I noticed immediately because several cases fell on me. No appreciable rise in the barrel during firing. We also found out later that taping tire weights to the barrel for "balance" restricted the movement enough to keep it from firing as a semi-automatic. Wonder what kids do today to learn about things.

"A handheld Puff The Magic Dragon........"

Maybe put it on a swivel on top of the family sedan? Driving through those 'qeustionable' negihborhoods would be so much less worrisome.

Hopolophobes.

While I don't want anyone shooting at me with a pea-shooter, a 12 gauge shotgun scares me more than this thing.
