re post no. 2990...
The last I read (from a news article), the smell turned out to be exhaust fumes. Sorry, don't remember which publication.

London-New York Flight Turns Back Decision Not Part Of Security Alert POSTED: 1:50 PM EST January 31, 2004
LONDON -- A London-to-New York Virgin Atlantic flight turned back to Heathrow Airport two and a half hours after it took off Saturday because of a burning smell on the plane, the airline said.
A Virgin spokeswoman said there was no danger to the 181 passengers on Flight 45 to John F. Kennedy International Airport and that the decision was made as a precaution.
The flight landed safely at Heathrow.
The passengers were being put on later flights to Kennedy and should arrive there Saturday, the spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity.
The decision to turn back was not part of any security alert, she added.

The effect of plowing it into a target would not be the same with a smaller plane, fuel, radiological dirty bomb

What bothered me was hearing how little time they have to setup/breakdown the stage at halftime, that it would take over 300 people!

I was wondering about Aero Mexico also. But if our man was in Mexico he doesn't need an international flight from London/France and they could just drive through the desert while security is busy checking airports

Good point. Frankly I'd be PO'd if I didn't get to see the commercials.

Another reason I don't think we're worried about *passengers* on those flights..
As porous as the borders are, all a bad guy has to do is fly to Canada or Mexico and waltz in.
So, it doesn't make logical sense that they are just trying to stop someone from coming into the US.
They are trying to stop someTHING, IMHO. And it is not a person.

The Haj uma are at Mt. Arafat now. It's the Day of Judgment, when Islam says every person will stand before God and answer for his deeds.
