Raiders hire Turner as new head coach

NFL.com wire reports

ALAMEDA, Calif. (Jan. 26, 2004) -- Norv Turner was hired as the Oakland Raiders' head coach, taking over a team that went from the Super Bowl to 4-12 in just a year.

Turner coached the Washington Redskins from 1994-00 -- making the playoffs only once -- and has been the Miami Dolphins' offensive coordinator the past two seasons.

He went 49-59-1 with the Redskins, his only NFL head coaching experience.

The Raiders said they would have an afternoon news conference with Turner. He replaces Bill Callahan, fired after two seasons as Oakland's head coach and since been hired by Nebraska.

Turner, 51, who grew up in Martinez, Calif., has 19 years of pro coaching experience. He also has been offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys and San Diego Chargers.

Turner began his NFL coaching career as an assistant with the Los Angeles Rams in 1985, and he was on Dallas' coaching staff from 1991-93, when the Cowboys won two straight Super Bowls.

The Raiders interviewed at least five coaching candidates during the past few weeks.

Oakland, plagued by injuries this season, posted its worst record since also going 4-12 in 1997. The Raiders tied with three other teams for fewest wins in the league in the biggest collapse by a team that reached the Super Bowl the previous year.

Turner will face many big decisions, including the status of four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Charles Woodson, 38-year-old quarterback Rich Gannon, 41-year-old receiver Jerry Rice and 37-year-old receiver Tim Brown. Gannon is coming off shoulder surgery.

"Make no mistake about it, 2003 was a year of defeat, and we intend to go through that mountain even though those rocks are coming down and bring this wagon through again. And we'll be there again," Raiders owner Al Davis said last week.

This isn't like the Sean Payton "hiring" is it? BTW, I thought they'd hold out and hire the Patriot's Def. coordinator.

A good OC, but not a good HC.

From a Redskins fan:

Have fun with Norv. He's a sincerely good guy and works damn hard, but get ready for all sorts of flat, lifeless "Well, we just didn't execute...the guys gave their best....we'll have to take a look and make some adjustments....blah blah blah monotone monotone monotone..." post-loss press conferences. I suspect Davis likes this guy because he's not very confrontational. I almost shudder for him a little bit, walking into that situation in Oakland.

Way to go for greatness, Crazy Al.  The Previous 7 years with Washington were all a fluke.  Norv's vanilla coaching will surely catapult your aging team back to dominance.

When Bill Belichick came to the Pats people were saying the same about him.

In over 40 years of watching Raiders football and only cheering for them when they play teams I hate more, I have leaned to hedge my bets against Al Davis making stupid moves.

As my Daddy used to say, "His Mama killed all the dumb ones."

Good news for Patriots fans. Now that all the head coach vacancies have been filled, Belichick gets to keep his coaching team intact for another year (and gets another year to groom successors for them).

He went 49-59-1 with the Redskins, his only NFL head coaching experience.

This is the best Al Davis could come up with? Bet not too many winning coaches would want to endure having to work for Davis.

Yeah, I really couldn't believe what I heard when I found this out. Davis must really be losing it! The Raiders will eat Turner alive in the locker room. He had no sense of discipline here in D.C. He's a good offensive coordinator, but I just can't see him succeeding as head coach in Oakland.
