AL QAEDA OPERATIVE CAUGHT IN IRAQ (Hassan Ghul)(Not a re-post)
Sky News ^ | 1/26/04

An al Qaeda operative with close ties to the suspected mastermind of the September 11, 2001, attacks has been captured in Iraq.

US president George W Bush said Hassan Ghul was helping al Qaeda step up attacks by insurgents against soldiers in Iraq.

He was captured last week.

Al Qaeda members are believed to have entered Iraq after the war last year that toppled President Saddam Hussein.

Mr Bush said Ghul "reported directly" to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who is suspected of coordinating the September 11 attacks on the United States that killed about 3,000 people and who was captured in Pakistan in March.

"He (Ghul) was moving money and messages around South Asia and the Middle East. He's a part of this network of haters that we're dismantling," Bush said.

"He was captured in Iraq where he was helping al Qaeda to put pressure on our troops. There's one less enemy we need to worry about with the capture of Hassan Ghul."

The Bush administration says there was a link between al Qaeda and Saddam although Bush has said there was no evidence that Saddam was involved in the September 11 attacks.

Are you one of those people that thinks terrorists and Baathists just bumped into each other in the middle of the Iraqi desert and were like, "Hey! I know I think you're an infidel, but what do you say? Let's team up!"...

Izzat Ibrahim Al-Douri and the Fedayeen had contacts with Al-Qaeda PRIOR to the invasion. It takes years to cultivate those kinds of relationships.

Other things prove that.

I know that. I'm just focusing on this specific capture. I don't think ANY captures of al-Qaeda now prove anything. The question is have any documents been found since the capture of Baghdad that are being kept confidential.

Ok. Your answer on that post answers my question.

Sorry for jumping the gun.

You are correct, Al-Qaeda captures now, prove nothing. They only reinforce what we already know.

I see where you are coming from. My bad.

I don't know to what extent they've teamed up. Maybe there's extensive cooperation going on. I haven't seen it documented though. The fact that a relationship existed for years has been documented. So far the details are sketchy. These captures don't tell us anything about that.

He's a part of this network of haters that we're dismantling," Bush said.

Plus, Abu Nidal was in Iraq with Saddam's blessing and in contact with , and training Al-Qaeda members.

Reason enough to take out Saddam.
I don't see why WMD's were ever even mentioned as a reason to go to war with Iraq, other than to mollify the U.N.

Our guys have finally figured out that the way to catch bad guys in this culture is to work the concentric circles of tribal and family connections toward the guy in the middle.

You guessed right.....that is how they got Saddam....started with the outer layer.....like peeling an onion....and worked the family connections....until they got the one guy who gave us Saddam. From what I have read we had been looking for the guy who gave us Saddam for over two months. We mounted a couple of raids to get him....but he kept evading us......until we nabbed him the Friday night before we grabbed Saddam.

Saw this earlier today "Hi Pakistan" article:

"President Pervez Musharraf has said 'al-Qaeda is on the run, they are hiding' on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, and Pakistan Army is pursuing them, as well as the Taliban supporters in South Waziristan.

"The President said this in an interview on Friday with Newsweek-Washington Post's Lally Weymouth, excerpts of which have been published Sunday. . . .

"Asked who were the brains behind assassination attempts against him, the President said: 'We don't know that yet.'

"Assenting that it was al-Qaeda, the President added: 'There are some Arabs involved -- some non-Pakistanis. Al Qaeda comes mostly from the Arab world...We are sure that one person got an instruction from an individual who was a non-Pakistani. We don't have that man. When we get him, he will tell us who ordered him to do it. Maybe it was Zawahiri.'

Asked that al Qaeda leader Ayman Zawahiri actually threatened his life, 'didn't he,?' the President said: 'Yes, and the start of the planning [for the assassination] coincided with that.'"

Let's hope the guy taken a week ago Sunday was one of those close to AZ.
