U.S. Soldier Dies in Iraq Grenade Attack
TIKRIT, Iraq - Insurgents fired a rocket propelled grenade at a Bradley fighting vehicle that was on patrol in central Iraq (news - web sites), killing a U.S. soldiers, a military spokeswoman said Sunday.
The grenade, which was fired on Saturday in Baiji town, pierced the driver's compartment and critically wounded the soldier, said Maj. Josslyn Aberle, a spokeswoman for the 4th Infantry Division.
The soldier was evacuated to a military hospital, where he died Sunday.
A second Bradley fighting vehicle returned fire toward the area from which the grenade was launched. Soldiers later captured six men who were in the possession of a grenade launcher, Aberle said.
The death raised to 513 the number of U.S. service members who have died since the United States and its allies launched the Iraq war on March 20. Most of the deaths have occurred since President Bush (news - web sites) declared an end to active combat May 1.
Baiji, which is north of Tikrit, is part of the Sunni Triangle where most of the fighting is taking place between U.S. troops and insurgents loyal to ousted dictator Saddam Hussein (news - web sites).

This is terrible. What a bad weekend for our troops.
I know that a few seasoned units rotated back to CONUS recently. Are these new guys getting killed, or what?
I can't understand this spike in casualties.

Soldiers later captured six men who were in the possession of a grenade launcher, Aberle said. Captured?
Why weren't they shot trying to escape?

Well Serurier, you have become quite the workhorse when it comes to FR.com posting. I have seen you around quite a bit, and you have left some excellent threads and posts in your wake.
I am a bit curious about you, and I hope that you do not mind my inquiry. Do you hail from Taiwan, PRC, or perhaps from the former Britsh colony? I am just curious, and it is not seriously relevant.
In any case, thank you for your posts, and concerns for our Troops who indeed are fighting for, and defending Freedom.

I resent that the movements of our troops were so well publicized. The enemies are capitalizing on the transition. Our media are a Fifth Column all the way.
We really must come up with a strategy to combat the IUD (i think that's the acronym) and the RPG's. We need to change our tactics and stop playing so nice.

Yes, we have fresh but seasoned elite troops coming on board. And, I'm confident our guys are doing all possible to neutralize the IED's but these are very difficult to defend against. Just ask any of the old AT&M guys from the old SOF school.

I'll tell you what I was told by someone who came back a few months ago, and you can take it FWIW...this person said that the Iraqis were more afraid of some of our units than others, and when the ones they were afraid of rotated back to the U.S., the insurgents were emboldened to begin attacking the new units, because they weren't as afraid of them as they were, say, the 3rd ID.

Good morning, serurier. I am so sorry we lost another brave Soldier. Thank you for honoring them with your work. His fellow Soldiers will, also.

I agree. I think that announcing massive troop movement is a big mistake even on the part of the pentagon.
To: Ragtime Cowgirl
Thank God for our heroes and their families! I pray for blessings and peace for his family and protection for all our troops.
To: serurier
Rest in peace brave soldier. Thank you for your courage on behalf of our freedom. Where do we find young men and women like you ?
To: Ronin
Captured? Why weren't they shot trying to escape? Capture yields infomation which yields more raids and more captures. Rinse. Repeat.
