Arizona Republican Party Chairman Bob Fannin on Saturday repeatedly called on members of his party to avoid division over the border controversy, during the annual AZ GOP convention in Mesa. However, after the general meeting, Fannin used the occasion of an executive board meeting to chastise district chairman for not supporting President George Bush's proposed Temporary Worker Program.
The move backfired on Fannin as angry district chairman revolted. Fannin's longevity as state party chairman beyond this second year of his two-year term is now very much in doubt.
Former Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives Jeff Groscost, now chairman of Legislative District 18, told Fannin he is the problem. Fannin was told that instead of opposing the vast majority of Republicans who support the Protect Arizona Now initiative and who oppose temporary and guest worker programs, he should use his position to relay that information to the White House.
Angry district chairmen believe that Fannin is out of touch with the grassroots precinct committeemen and that they cannot depend on him. Some of the chairmen discussed finding a replacement for Fannin, whose term expires in a year. The name of former Governor Fife Symington came up in a discussion of the volunteer chairman's position.
Earlier in the day, Fannin had opened the general meeting with these remarks: "We are on a roll! Hasn't this been a great week! The president of the United States was here, and he makes everybody happy with his down-to-earth ways. One way to keep on a roll is to stay united. We have such great principles. The only way the Democrats can beat us is if they can divide us."
Before adjourning the general meeting, Fannin issued another call for unity. By then, 74 percent of the precinct captains had voted to endorse the Protect Arizona Now initiative -- in direct opposition to the White House and GOP leadership. There has been a disconnect between party leadership and the people ever since the PAN effort launched last year.
Fannin's plea for unity lasted for only a few more moments. Shortly thereafter, the border issue boiled over in the executive committee meeting.
It's not like Saturday's 317-109 vote in favor of PAN was anything new to Fannin and Republican leadership. Just two weeks earlier, the Maricopa County GOP had endorsed the PAN initiative as well.
Yup, wonder who's next as the GOP continues the job of building the One World Socialist State. Could it be the gun rights advocates? Bush/Rove have clearly show the door to the anti-free trade, anti-illegal immigrants, pro small government conservatives. I don't think he'll turn on the pro-life people, but the guns rights people had better look out. Bush gutted the first amendment no reason to believe he won't sellout the second, so he can "take another issue" away from the Democrats.
Just give him this link. Everything you've said is there.
we got to keep the presumer on the GOP and if Bush continues his move to the left then show our displeasure by sitting out this election, and watching the GOP lose. The GOP must be made to realize that it loses without conservatives. Also, don't give up on the Democrats, as the GOP moves left there is an opportunity to take over the Dems and move them to the right! Particularly here in the south. Lots of conservative democrats down here.
When the GOP loses, you lose...happens every time.
Also, don't give up on the Democrats, as the GOP moves left there is an opportunity to take over the Dems and move them to the right!
Whoever told you that thinks you're gullible.
Particularly here in the south. Lots of conservative democrats down here.
How much of the Conservative Democrat agenda gets enacted when the Democrats are in charge? When you vote for Conservatives Democrats, you empower Liberal Democrats and risk giving them the majority....but you already know that.......
I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't the ones who push for a third party the hardest. That would shock the hell out of a lot of in-compassionate republicans, hopefully into joining them. Imagine what an in-compassionate third party could do for America and our budget. Our culture would snap right back into line with the Founders ideas.
I will most likely be holding my nose again this election and vote for Bush. The only time I enjoyed voting for him was when the ran agaist Ann Richards.
I believe that their party was taken over by Socialists and I think they will continue to move further Left while saying things that appeal to moderates and others.
I will most likely be holding my nose again this election and vote for Bush.
You don't have to hold your nose. We can all think of worse Republican candidates than Bush.
The only time I enjoyed voting for him was when the ran agaist Ann Richards.
That was a state election. He's now running against people worse than Richards in a national election, IMO.
The song is Christian "pop" and titled appropriately: "PASS IT ON"
You prove the point of those who say they will not vote for Bush because of his Amnesty Proposal (among other outrages). If your above assessment true, then there is absolutely no reason at all why conservatives that cherish the now quaint concept of a Sovereign America should vote for Bush. So why worry about the exodus of conservatives out of the Bush Camp?
BTW, I happen to believe you are right. "W" Bush IMO has had it out for the conservative wing of the party since his Dad's defeat in 1992. He needed conservatives to get into office but it is inordinately clear that building a new political coalition that has virtually nothing to do with Conservatism or an America with Borders is a top priority of Bush/Rove.
I was thinking that it was more like a solid kick between the legs. Message: Stand up and fly right or we'll make sure you crash.
Dear Mr. President, Sir, Are you listening to the voters yet?
But the hate undocumented workers crowd isn't conservative.
No, this is pandering, and the underlying concern is the encouragement of increased illegal immigration. It happened when Ronald Reagan did it, it's already happeing right now:Bush Plan a Magnet.
BTW, have you figured out how the fedgov is going to round up and deport the "guest workers" once their "permits" expire? And if there is a way to do that, why isn't it being done now. With due respect, you are walking with Bush blinders on.
I just keep wondering why the words "Agenda 21" continue to be ridiculed when it should be obvious to everyone what's happening.
Everyone from both parties needs to ignore the party dress code blinder rules before we hit the bottom and the UN makes all important decisions for us.
Most U.S. politicians are out of touch with the taxpaying citizens. They are supposed to represent US, but most of them don't, they're too busy with their own agendas. Throw the bums out, all of them!
Please explain the benefit of having illegal aliens in America. We have well marked Points of Entry on our borders and our international airports and harbors.
Do we need to have these criminals here? Why, how many of them, and if we don't need them, how would you make them leave?
I am waiting for your full intelligently thought out response, not just snippets of it.
What's with this "hate" business? I guess when all else fails use the race card.
What *most of us* hate is the systematic destruction of America's sovereignty by an entrenched class of politicians who see it in their interest to allow (encourage) 3rd world nations to invade America with impunity to further entrench their power, expand government--and reward their backers. Allowing umpteen millions of unskilled, uneducated immigrants from nations with no history or connection to true self-governance or rule of law is a sure path towards the ruin of the American Republic. I thought history was clear on this.
BTW, just for your info, my best friend in high school was a Mexican American and part of my extended family is Mexican-American. Amazing what you can learn if you just ask before smearing.
Oh and feel free to call me a liar.
You know as well as I do that immigrant workers take the jobs nobody else wants, particularly in the service industries. In fact, by 2006, America will have a shortage of nearly 9 million workers. The worker shortage will last for the next 20 years because it is based on demographics, not just skills training. This worker shortage is hitting the service sector particularly hard.
So it's without question they help this economy.
That's exactly right. Where concerning politicians it is particularly important to focus on what THEY DO, not what they SAY. I thought this was Common Sense! On that, the direction we as a nation are headed is quite apparent--no matter how they try to spin it or obfuscate their motives.
