Dean, Lobotomized He shouldn't take that abuse from Diane Sawyer. By Timothy Noah Posted Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at 10:00 PM PT
You think Howard Dean is too angry? In his interview on Jan. 22 with Diane Sawyer of ABC News, he wasn't nearly angry enough. After the (unmarried) New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd sniffed that "the doctors Dean seem to be in need of some tips on togetherness and building a healthy political marriage," and the first female editor of The New Yorker compared Dean's missus to "the mad wife in Jane Eyre, screaming in the attic upstairs," the little woman relented and gave what Sawyer revealed with mild disgust was her very first TV interview. Dr. Judith Steinberg, M.D., explained that she stays at home because she has her own private practice

Dean and his wife sure looked geeky on Sawyer's show.

I agree...they are not a very attractive couple. The Mrs Dr. Dean has some really big teeth. She would benefit from a trip to the beauty salon too.

You can tell what her priorities are. She's a plain Jane, a doctor and has a real career as opposed to other wives I can think of. She is not a "politician's wife" type obviously

That's true, and I admire her decision to stay home in VT with her son and her patients and I was rooting for her to tell Dianne Sawyer to shut up and mind her own business. But still...she was being interviewed on national TV in an effort to save her husband's campaign. You'd think she could've had something done with her hair. She looked like an old hippy.

I liked her saying that she didn't watch TV (other than stuff on video). I don't think I've watched but a half hour a week for about the past 8 months and I don't miss it a bit.

Didn't see the interview. On the one hand I respect Mrs Dr Dean's stand here. But on the other, does she really think she will be able to continue her practice should she become First Lady of the United States? (Of course, I don't think that's going to happen)

Oh, have you seen Leiberman's wife? He's wise to keep her out of public view. I saw her in an interview once. At first, I thought that she was just some gin ravaged rogue. Then the camera zoomed in on Joe's bulldog-like face and I put two and two together.

I read the whole article (of this post), I've seen the yeehaa video and I did watch his explanation of it last night. The article seems right on target to me. There are plenty of reasons to want to keep Dean away from the White House, but the yeehaa rant is way way down on the list. It really befuddles me how shallow and undiscerning we humans can be.

Dean should have said that he was working on his "Rebel Yell" for the SC primary.

They did their damndest to pretty her up for the interview. Lucianne Goldberg had the best take--said she looked like a cross between Hillary and Hedda Nussbaum.

Lucianne Goldberg is no prize petunia, either.

I dont see that with a full time practice that is so dependent on her that she can be much of a stay at home mom to son and daughter. Also the statement that he gets a little crazy from time to time is nice to know and is a great trait for a US President to have

In this era, where it almost seems like everybody wants to be on TV, and so many women of a certain age have gotten plastic surgery, she seems like a real person. So she's no beauty queen. Who cares?

Diane Sawyer proved that horses can talk.
