Need advice from gun owners regarding eye protection (VANITY)
Posted on 01/22/2004 12:22:59 PM PST by 1Old Pro
After finally getting my first (starter) .22 pistol for target practice at the club I joined 3 years ago and never used, I need advise on eye protection.
I wear glasses for distance but not contacts. the lenses are plastic but should I be wearing something over the glasses. If so, any advise on what can be used over glasses and where they can be acquired.
Thanks in advance.

I use some $2 Lexan lab safety glasses in my shootin' bag when I forget my Revo sunglasses in the truck.

Make sure they have a "Z87" on them. This will tell you that they are ANSI approved and are the "proper" approved safety glasses. This means they are tested and will take a beating.
I use UVEX safety glasses myself. They come in clear, amber, and dark shades. They are very comfortable.

UVEX... That's what mine are.

Why bother?
Just close your eyes when you pull the trigger.
That's what I see most people at the range do...

Lots of good advise here so far --I carry several pair in my shootin' kit (clear, dark, yellow, etc. ).
You need protection from the hot powder particles, and gas flying around -- which is normal, but worse with revolvers and short barrels.
The .22 cooks up a good load of pressure, too, and you need to be protected in the event of a case rupture.

In general a "starter gun" is one that is used to start races, and can only fire blanks.

I have a pair of safety glasses that work well, but have a slight opening at the top and side. Just enough for a .22 shell to slip in. It happened last Thursday and if you think you have time to get it out before it leaves a mark. Think again! It's just now healing up. The type that are completely enclosed are just too warm and cause sweating into the eyes.
Not that it stops me any more then the occasional shell down the shirt!
We all do the "Hot Shell Dance" every once in a while. ;)
Time to go! Range night!

It doesn't really cost that much to get a set of prescription shootin' glasses made - I have a set with polycarbonate lenses that have defeated many a hostile hot casing. Got 'em tinted yeller so's I look cool.
Truth is, though, that most modern-formula plastics are up to the ANSI standards, but they do scratch, most of them, and at two hunnert buckadingdongs a pop them's some potentially expensive safety glasses. If you can stand to wear a second pair of plastic glasses over the top that's the cheapest option. Me, my ears won't take that with the muffs and the hat on top.

In the national competition in Camp Perry, Ohio all they require is some sort of glasses to prevent the backspray of hot gasses. Regular eye glasses work just fine. More than that is fine and never wrong, but the requirement is fairly casual.

Time to post that pic of algore in Nam looking down the barrel.....Eye protection starts with not looking down the barrel...... if anyone has it.

I wear contacts and use regular shooting glasses with easy-to-change different color lenses. Yellow lenses to brighten the day. Dark lenses when the sun is bright.

Make sure they are wrap around to give full protection from the side. A revolver in the lane next to you can send powder particles and lead shavings in your direction.
