Another reason for manned missions. Robots can only do what you program them to do and cannot act on contingincies.
With man in the loop you have ultimate flexibility.
Remember, on Apollo 11, Neil Armstrong changed the landing site at the last minute when the original spot looked too rocky. If we had robotically tried to land the LEM, it would possibly crashed.

As I recall, weren't they having temperatures in excess of predicted with the comm device? Perhaps the circuits burned out... This is really a shame...Earth technology works great on the Earth.
We need manufacturing jobs on the moon to make the electronics that will hold up on Mars.

I would also add: they ARE able to communicate with the system, but the team is only receiving something along the lines of "I heard you."
Here's hoping that the rover shakes this off.
