I live in Florida, and it is true that one of the things that has enabled these folks to drop beneath the radar is that Florida is like CA of 50 years ago - you come here, and you can do whatever you want, as long as you're not doing it in my backyard. Personally, I think that's a great attitude, but the problem is that the Islamics have taken advantage of our basic tolerance and kindness to bury their weapons in our land.

They also have lots of money. There is a big and active Islamic Center (set up by Sami Al Arian's group) here at UF in Gainesville. And they are getting people: the other day, at my gym, I saw two fat, hopeless white girls with local accents sitting there in their veils and shrouds. The Muslims are putting money into this, and they're getting the losers - like Padilla. But even losers can be dangerous.

And they are everywhere. Jeb Bush's recent faith-based prison initiative has backfired because Muslim "chaplains" are included in it, and one of the prisoners was recorded (even in my local liberal paper) as complaining about the "new religion" they were trying to teach him.

Fifteen years ago, when the fatwa against Salman Rushdie was declared and both his defenders and detractors managed to miss what the business was really about, the Times's Clifford Longley nailed it very well. Surveying the threats from British Muslim groups, he wrote that certain Muslim beliefs "are not compatible with a plural society: Islam does not know how to exist as a minority culture. For it is not just a set of private individual principles and beliefs. Islam is a social creed above all, a radically different way of organising society as a whole."

For starters, Florida, especially South Florida, is home to 150,000 Muslims, mostly of Middle Eastern extraction.

Highly ironic, as South Florida is also home to the largest concentration of Jews (on a per capita basis) in the United States. Palm Beach County is 38% Jewish, the highest percentage in the USA. Broward (where Padilla was from) is about 32% (I think) Jewish.

Hopefully, the JDL, in addition to the FBI, are keeping their eyes open down there.
