Sharpton gets zero percent in Iowa

By Lester Holloway

Presidential candidate Revd Al Sharpton faced a blow to his hopes of taking the White House when he scored an embarrassing zero percent of the vote in Iowa

The civil rights leader came bottom of the poll in the first stage of the race to choose the Democratic challenger to George W Bush for the US general election later this year.

Sharpton had decided not to campaign in Iowa but instead concentrate on other states, however the Iowa results will not have done much to create the impression of a snowballing campaign.

Sharpton’s zero percent score was behind Wesley Clark’s 0.1 percent. Senator John Kerry won the poll, with fellow Senator John Edwards coming second. The ‘frontrunner’, former Vermont governor Howard Dean came a disappointing third.

The only other black contender for the White House Carol Moseley Braun, had pulled out of the race to back Dean.

Some African American leaders see the 2004 election as a chance to ‘get even’ after thousands of black votes were ‘discarded’ in Florida in the 2000 election which George Bush controversially won.

Melanie Campbell, president and CEO of the National Coalition for Black Civic Participation (NCBCP), said: "I think there is still a lot of anger out there after what happened in Election 2000, people’s votes not getting counted. This is the very first presidential election that we’ll be faced with."

Voter registration campaigns involving the black churches have reported success in signing up 2,000 voters in just two weeks. They aim to bolster the black vote in Florida by 15 percent, threatening to win the state for the Democrats.

This might not be pc, but what % of Iowa's population might be considered black?

And to then compound my social gaffe, what % of those might consider voting for Sharpton?

The only votes "discarded" in Florida was the military vote...

The author is under the delusion that Al is a serious candidate? Well, I suppose if you were reading the mainstream press on the other side of the pond, that's possible as the unmentionable does not get written about.

Al Sharpton's participation in this whole circus just raises the comedy factor.

Let's keep him in there.

Zero percent for Sharpton. I'm shocked! And here I thought that he and Mosely-Braun were serious contenders.

I'm angry that this BS is being perpetuated.

Hearings were held by the Civil Rights Commission. Not one provable case of anyone being prevented from voting was found.

Nothing. That can be said for anything Melanie Campbell says.

Dontcha just love this stuff? I had the TV on in the background last night and all of a sudden I hear this lunatic screaming and yelling in spanish. I was like WTF is that? I look at the tube and it is Howard Dean delivering a harangue. That guy is stark-raving hilariously insane. This is (was) the Dem's frontrunner? I was in tears.

It is surprising that A didn't do better..You'd think that he'd have stood out from all the other candidates, especially with all the snow in Iowa..

How can they write stuff like this without attribution?

Because there is no retribution to prevent them from saying it.

"Get even" for Florida — oh, you mean they want to avenge themselves on the Democrats and the media who persist in portraying them as too stupid to PUNCH HOLES in a PIECE OF PAPER, and in trying to USE them to steal an election, and in pretending that NOBODY KNOWS that EVERY recount has vindicated the election of President Bush?

Yes, who can blame them for wanting payback for that?

“How can they write stuff like this without attribution? “

Because it is a lie and not attributable to anything.

The votes discarded where actually the absentee military votes, overwhelmingly Republican, blocked by Algore & Co.
