January 20, 2004 -- In an Iowa meltdown, Howard Dean got socked with a disastrous third-place finish last night, as John Kerry pulled off a stunning political comeback to win the first-in-the-nation Democratic contest for president.
Dean's collapse, combined with the combined surge of Sen. Kerry (Mass.) and Sen. John Edwards (N.C.), who finished second, threw the race wide open.

Not to toss the "Nazi" label around, but did you ever see old film reels of Hitler at the podium. Dean has amazingly simular animations. Flying spit and all.

Is Howard Dean's candidacy worthy of a question card in the next edition of Trivial Pursuit?

A little work at the Photshop hair salon and you'll see where I'm coming from....

And the biggest winners are the Clintons, whose Wesley Clark strategy ensured that Dean would be derailed.

That's the best possible scenario for the Republicans, and very likely I might add. The primary in NH won't be like the more restricted caucases and Dean will likely win, but I can't imagine him winning in SC. I can see this going on for some time and the RAT candidates exhausting their war chests (except for ketchup Kerry) and weakening whoever eventually wins the RAT nomination.

Edwards is a bad candidate for the GOP. I don't think he would win - he really doesn't have the experience yet - but he is a Southerner, and would split the South. The Demos do best when they have a Southerner - Northern liberals are a disaster for them.
From listening to his speech last night, he would be a disaster - if you think your insurance is high now, wait until Edwards is president. He would stop business in it's tracks. Another trial lawyer is all we need.

What I was thinking about the caucus was, Gebhardt ran on an immigration jobs anti Nafta platform - and lost. Maybe the American jobs going overseas issue isn't the winner democrats think.

According to Steyn, Dean is just acting angry:
"I'd say Howard Dean is a sane man pretending to be crazy. Whereas General Clark gives every indication of a crazy man pretending to be sane.

You are right on. That is why Dean was so angry last night. He wasn't mad at the voters, he was mad at the Clinton-McAuliffe machine, and the press that carries their water.
He has been purposefully destroyed and he knows it. His emotional problems just made it easier for them.
If he perseveres, he will be trashed even worse. The Clintons have P.I.'s in every little corner, and sent them after Dean a long time ago. And if nasty little exposee's don't work, then I'm sure a well timed threat or two a la Kathleen Willey will.

>Edwards on the other hand has been more rational in his campaign messages. Bush has sure alienated a lot of people over his immigration proposals,<
I've heard non-democrat independent types say they were very impressed by Edwards. He's probably more of a contender than many people think, and remember, he's got eye appeal for women voters who were so attracted (shudder) to Bill Clinton.
To: LS
While I agree the Clintons are probably delighted, I don't think they had much to do with Dean's problems. He is a train wreck looking for a place to happen.

Correct, the little peanut farmer did not endorse Dean, but did nothing to disuade the use of his constant toothy grin being used as publicity. But then, Jimininy Carter never turned down a photo op.
It is fun to watch...what happens now if Dean wins New Hampshire, or even comes in second?? Not that I think this a possibility.
To: leadpenny
I was trying to think of where he might fit in. You've hit on it. He reminds me of Lee Corso when he coached U of L and IU. Bobby Knight also comes to mind. Now don't forget that other wild man, Woody Hayes at Ohio State.

It will be hard for the silly media to take Dean seriously after this act...."Where are the strawberries", "Marbles/Steel Balls in the hand"...Oh! I forgot, that's an John McShame line.

IMHO, Mr. Malone has a very good grasp of the Iowa results. I witnessed the same effect last fall in our local Loudoun County, VA Board of Supervisors, Chairman of the Board race. Overkill amounts of: automated phone calls, direct mail and the coupling of entirely too many attacks with these voter outreaches resulted in the Republican candidate POing just enough of his base to lose the election his GOP colleagues mostly prevailed in.

To understand Dean's and his supporters' violent rage, one only has to acknowledge that a powerful liberal has been denied what he considered an entitlement.
To: doosee
Wonder if Howard is a chair thrower? Since he is a Yankee's fan, imagine him in the Yank dugout coming out to argue a call. His rage works to the Billy Martin level, kicking dirt at the umpires, then he runs around and rips the bases out for good measure. What a hoot..... Well, since he does claim to be a Red Sox fan now, imagine if he tries to get Pedro Martinez's endorsement, and Pedro tosses him to the ground the way he did Don Zimmer. Now that would be classic TV!
