In One Texas Town, It's Not MLK's Birthday - It's "Civil Rights Day"

A local Austin radio station is reporting about a suburb that chose to officially recognize today not as "Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday" but as "Civil Right Day". This is the middle-class City of Cedar Park, northwest of Austin.
The former mayor, who is black, condemns the decision saying it is a "slap in the face" to the memory of Dr. King. The radio station did not offer any quotes from people who supported the more inclusive holiday title.

Unfortunately, I could find no other details either with the Austin newspaper, the radio station's website or the city's own website.
Personally, I think it's a great idea. Since Christmas has now been all but banned and renamed as "Winter Holiday", since Washington and Lincoln are now lumped together as "Presidents Day", why shouldn't Dr. King's birthday be morphed into the larger concept of "Civil Rights Day"? Why not make it "Diversity Day" or "Multicultural Day"? Wouldn't that be more inclusive and less divisive?

To me Civil Rights Day makes more sense but that's just me. I don't have a problem with MLK day. Today I worked and that was it. Same as any other day.

I live in Cedar Park, and I just stayed inside all day. Wouldn't know it was such an eventful day, except the dang kids are home from school. (By Monday, teenage boys are dang kids *L*)

My sister-in-law sent me an email encouraging reflection in observance of this great day. She included noble quotes from MLK. Since she didn't specifically say 'this great day' was MLK's birthday, I sent her a reply that yes I would take a moment to reflect on Robert E. Lee's birthday. Noble quotes from the general were included.

"Civil Responsibility Day" is perfect. The libs and dems have belittled Columbus Day, Washington's Birthday to Presidents Day, and taken Christ out of Christmas as being to divisive and now let the dems eat crow. What's the next step?
Shall we revoke all schools named MLK?
Shall we rename all Boulevards/Streets/Avenues named MLK?
Shall we rewrite and revise all textbooks with any mention of MLK?
Shall we invoke a political correctness attitude to forbid any mention of the name MLK?
Funny . . . . that's what libs have accomplished with other issues.

Most of the teachers and parents in my area would have liked for the children to celebrate a holiday from school on presidents day. (I posted this on another poll today as well).

There are a number of states where it's officially called Civil Rights Day. Utah is one.
Personally, I refer to it as "Prove You're not a Racist Day".

For whatever "Dr." King accomplished on earth, this "man of God" spent his last night alive comitting adultery with two prositutes. Only "Dr." King called it "< bleep >ing for Jesus! So if I could observe either day, the choice is clear.
