Rush's PERFECT comments Re: Donovan McNabb
me
Posted on 01/19/2004 9:26:26 AM PST by Pukin Dog
For those who missed it, Limbaugh performed the most perfect comments on Donovan McNabb this morning by not even mentioning his name.
Instead he contrasted the way that Payton Manning came out and took responsibility for his performance against the way that the media instantly set out to blame the Eagles' wide recievers for what happened to them.
It was the best revenge, because by not mentioning McNabb, no one in the media can say that Rush attacked McNabb, but to all us football fans, what Rush DIDNT say, was LOUD AND CLEAR. Thanks Rush!

The media blitz is the problem. That's why I always hated Joe Montana. I'm sure he was a great guy, and Lord knows he was a great quarterback, but the announcers would just go on and on about him. "Joe made a great throw" "The receiver made a great catch because Joe knew to throw it behind him" That was a great tackle! Joe inspired the defense to do that!"
It looks like Michael Vick is next.

Me too! But I am encouraged to see they hired Dick Juron to be the D coach.

Race is what started the whole debate. It started Week 1 on the ESPN NFL Countdown Show, where it was blatantly obvious to me (and as Rush would reveal later, to him as well), that the Countdown "gang" was puffing up black QBs at the expense of white QBs.
I agree that it is disturbing that it came down to race for the ESPN NFL Countdown crew. I think they set Rush up for his later comments - the HATE that Steve Young had for Rush was palpable through my TV screen.
I've never expressed any vindication for the Eagles loss (although because I have met Jerry Richardson and his family I am a mild Panthers fan). I am glad that Rush was able to discuss the contrast between Manning and *the others* this morning though. He deserved a chance to devote time on his program to that subject.
And the NFL fines teams that don't bring in black candidates for head coaching interviews - in case you missed it, the NFL is very much about race issues these days (not that I care for it - let the best people get the best jobs on the field, on the sidelines, and in the front office).

I watched that entire game last night, including post-game coverage. They really did blame all those interceptions on the receivers, not McNabb! It was almost surreal.

Yeah, better count the dimpled chads again while you're at it...
Rush dosen't need anybody's permission or approval to express an opinion, be it on politics OR football. And the absolutely pathetic performance of Collinsworthless, Berman, Gumbel, et.al.,(who all made Rush's point for him last night) proves that no special qualifications are needed to be a football commentator, either.
I would also point out, as Rush explained, that the ESPN producers and talent choose the topics and dialogue before the show goes on-air. It was not just Rush speaking unilaterally. Plus, he was encouraged to 'spice it up' a bit by one of the ESPN producers just before the week 4 show.
My gut feeling is that Rush was a little too naive and trusting of the ESPN people from the get-go; thinking it was just a football show. The Tinfoil-hat guy in me senses that Rush was being set up for 'an incident' from the beginning. It seemed the timing of the McNabb flap with the prescription drug revelation was a little too well choreographed.
I'd like Rush to do a Super Bowl play-by-play radio simulcast. I really don't want to listen to Greg Gumbel.

He was in the grasp of defenders last week, but this week none of the defensive players touched him. He was fair game, and the last I checked, they are still playing tackle, not touch football.
Eagles fans deserve this loss. I'm talking about the Eagles fans at the stadium who are vicious and violent. There are many of them. I'm tickled they lost.

To be fair Jerry Rice got a lot of attention as well, and to a lesser extent Dwight Clark and Roger Craig.
The Niners were a great dynasty with quite a few key players on both sides of the ball.
And Joe is one of the great QBs of all time, a fact that will get some fawning by announcers.

yeah, I'm sure you put those NFL guys to shame, clicking a mouse with a brain injury.
Oh for Heaven's sake, get your panties untwisted. There have been, and are now, much tougher quarterbacks in the NFL. McNair is just one and I can promise you that he is tough enough to "cowboy up" and play through pain. The rules are slightly different in the NFL as they in your regional and local leagues. You can continue to pummel the ball carrier until the whistle blows in the NFL. As hard as it may be to face, they're right and you are wrong. Your ad hominem insults are boorish and pathetic.

Rush hates McNabb for some reason. Balderdash. Rush made an incredibly valid point on ESPN in week 3 of the season--a point which no one on the show disputed.
Three days later, all of a sudden, the PC police find the comment "racist" and Rush is forced out of the sports commentating business.
Rush was expressing an opinon about a guy's performance--not preaching "hate".

The quarterback was not downed, the whistle had not blown yet, you play until the whistle is blown in the NFL.Yup... anyone remember the Denver game where they just watched the downed Colts player stand up and run into the end zone?

The Pats may seem like a complete team, but in fact they were one of the worst teams in the league in rushing offense this year. They averaged just over 100 yards per game as a team, and their average of 3.4 yards per carry ranked 30th out of the 32 teams in the NFL.
It's pretty unusual for a team to make it this deep into the playoffs without a solid running game.

I'm not sure if it's totally about race. It just seems that sportwriters never seem to match the level of praise witht the level of performance. Call it LeBron James syndrome if you will. Some who got high praise deserved it (Manning, McNair, Favre, Culpepper), some didn't get it who desrved it (Brady) Some got high praise when their performances merited lower forms of Kudos (McNabb, Kitna, Green). It's just the way things are. I'm sure next year the Vick bandwagon will be unbearable.

It seems like if the media wants to ride the jockey of a black QB, it should be Steve McNair. He's the real deal.

Vick is a perfect example of why NFL QBs don't run. Sitting the bench 3/4 of the year. Hard to be a great QB on the sidelines. Just ask the great Donovan F. McNabb.

Now, we'll probably see McNabb throw four TD passes in the Pro Bowl since the defense can only rush four men... How can that be, blake?? I thought he had broken ribs!! ;-)

Instead of a "luxury tax," the NFL could simply adopt a system that I've been recommending for years -- a "variable salary cap" of some sort, in which only 50% of the salaries of a team's own draft picks would count against the cap. If the contract for my star running back expires this year, and I have $2.5 million per year of cap room to sign him, I can offer him a contract for up to $5 million per year and still fit him under the cap. If another team offers him $6 million, then I can't keep him -- but he counts for the full $6 million against their cap.
