Girl killed in park stunt

A 16-year-old Marysville girl died in a city park Saturday as she duplicated a movie stunt that involved a merry-go-round.

The victim, whose name was not released, died in S.J. Field Park on Rideout Way before 6 p.m., after she flew off a merry-go-round and hit her head on the street pavement, according to the Marysville Police Department.

According to witnesses, seven teenagers attached a rope to a truck and wrapped it around a merry-go-round, then watched it spin as the truck pulled the rope away from the ride. The stunt was previously performed in "Jackass: The Movie."

Keep in mind its been 10 years since I did anything with Excel so I could of screwed up somewhere. But 37MPH sounds about right if you have enough rope wrapped around the merry go round. Also I'm not accounting for things like wind resistance and the flailing of the individual.

That sounds about right. Last year's Tour de France had a crash involving a rider near Lance Armstrong, and he wiped out @40-45mph (I'm guessing based on the fact that they had to slow for an upcoming turn) and considering how far he flew/skidded across the pavement and dirt, I'd say if he had been a bit higher and flung up and off rather than down, he probably would have made 24 yards easily.

He had a helmet on and knew how to somewhat fall (not that he had much of a chance to prepare) and yet still ended up with a crushed femur and a lot of broken bones. The idiot on the merry-go-round never had a chance, regardless of helmet or not (well she might have ended up a quadriplegic).

I watched Jackass the Movie, and didn't attempt any of the stunts after seeing it.

You beat me to it - I fix lawnmowers for neighbors; every year I have to remind them of the incredible force a one pound steel blade spinning at 3000RPM possesses and the need to keep body parts outside the cutting deck area and children and "spectators" outside the path of flying objects neglected in the cutting path.

My son (now 38) went to a babysitter when he was 5 for a couple of years in Milford, Ohio outside Cincinnati; her husband was the development engineer for that toy. Jeff had several of the prototypes - alas, they're all long gone now.

I don't agree with your thesis here. I remember watching Evil Knievel as a kid.... and I didn't feel compelled to replicate his stunts. Some people just have plum manure for brains.

I think you are confusing morality with stupidity or reckless behavior for the soul (pun intended) purpose of flailing with the social conservative cudgel.

If that's you are thinking, you are wrong.

Somethings are wrong because they are dangerous. It's because they can kill you. By making it "inappropriate" to tell people they are doing something wrong, touchy, feely liberals have endangered lives. They say they feel your pain, but they don't. If they really cared, they say what needs to be said. But they won't because they might feel awkward.

For example, roadside memorials. A child dies because they've been given a car that's too much for them, after they've had accidents in similar vehicles that the parents replaced.

That memorial shouldn't read, "Poor [insert trendy Soccer mom selected name here i.e., Trevor, Skyler, Montana, whatever...] we miss him so much", it should read, "Here a child died because his parents found it more fun to be his friend than his parents."
